Is San Sebastian to Bilbao a good place to start? Picturesque?
You'll miss the alpinist track along the ridge of Jaizkiebel, which probably is the most stunning view on the del Norte.- Niels

Following the coast from Santander to Boo
I did follow the coast and turned inland through Liencres. Admittedly, I caught a bus here to avoid the road to get to Santa Cruz de Bezana. Alternatively, you may walk to Santa Cruz from Soto de la Mariña. Great walk from Santander to Liencres for me.- Niels

Walking the coast from Santander, the best option to me gotta be the magnificent albergue in Santa Cruz de Bezana. It's definitely one of the best on del Norte, and it's right between Soto de la Mariña and Boo.- Niels

Yes, it can probably can be done depending on your state of fitness. But I wouldn't. It is a pretty tough route. Very much up and down, and may be a bít muddy, too, at that time of the year. AND walking that long for your first day is really not adviseable except you've done that for some time...- Niels

Walking from Irún, Hondarrabia's right behind the medieval wall, before you turn left to walk uphill to the beautiful church on the top. You'll have to go to Irún first though. Where to spend first night?
Hondarribia's preferable to stay in - a good pension is Txoko Goixa or something like that. This town is dripping with atmosphere and a wonderful place to stay. No detour. Avoid Irún for the night.- Niels

Places to stay
It's all about preferences. There is a bundle of albergues on the Way, which I wouldn't miss for the World, roughly put. Then there are lots of very nice albergues, and there are lots of not so nice ones, which could make those days memorable in the bad way! I'd try to make it a priority to...- Niels

Agree! Wholeheartedly! Maybe the most beautiful part of the coastline of Cantabria. Although I went inland to the albergue at Santa Cruz de Bezana (one of the best albergues on the del Norte) after having seen Virgen del Mar. The walk from the island to the albergue isn't much fun though. But...- Niels

Albergue in Santander
As I remember this particular albergue, it was certainly not an uplifting experience, but I didn't share yours. It wasn't the cleanest og places either. I didn't take notice of the problem of being locked up, but I agree with you. It doesn't Seem safe. As for the curfew thing, I don't agree...- Niels

busiest towns
I plan myself to avoid Santilliana del Mar on weekends and festitive days, as it should be full of tourists these days. In the summer, this town probably Will be a bit crowded all days. Probably a good idea to book, if possible. Buen Camino from Niels.- Niels
