    Del Norte

I walked the aragonés because I was interested in it and I wanted to get in shape before my second Norte Camino. I was able to handle all the hills until Bilbao with relative ease compared to my first Norte when I was gasping for air Al day, every day. That was four years ago so that plan may...

If you do camp, don’t build a fire. The Guardia Civil will not like that.

LIVE from the Camino Norte in real time

I absolutely loved the second half of the Norte last year. It was my second time through that part. Second time was much better than the first. However, never fear, I am certain you will enjoy the Primitivo

    Alternate route after Castro Urdiales

Completely agree with your feelings about the N634 section from Liendo to Laredo. The coastal variant you are asking about is very nice. Some ups and downs but there is a good path, no need to scramble over rocks. In my opinion it is without a doubt preferable to walking along N634. You can find...

Distance between Boo de Piélagos and Santillana del Mar?

When I did this I walked from the lighthouse to Liencres where I ran out of energy. My fitness app recorded 22 km. The lighthouse seemed like a convenient place to start. It’s a beautiful walk, that gets even better after Soto. I did not stay in Liencres but there is a least one hotel there that...

Distance between Boo de Piélagos and Santillana del Mar?

If you take the train from Boo to Mogro, just across the river, then looking at Wise Pilgrim the distance from Mogro to Santillana is 21.2 km. I hope that helps. I walked the coastal variants north of Santander last year. I found it difficult to figure out mileages when you are walking on and...

Start Norte from Bayonne/Irun or Gijon?

No question start in Irun or Bayonne.

    First time on a Camino

You can email the Monasterio. I think they would appreciate you letting them know you are coming. I showed up there with two friends at 1800. The priest was not happy with us 😊

Recommendations for “not to be missed” & “ok to skip”

I would like to offer another suggestion. Walk the Norte to Bilbao, then take an easy bus ride to Oviedo and walk the Primitivo to Lugo. I think that will fit your time frame. If you do that and are disappointed come back here and fight me😀. Or… one more thing, resolve to start in Irun and to...

Recommendations for “not to be missed” & “ok to skip”

I typed a big long response, hoping to give you the benefit of my great Norte wisdom. Then I deleted it because I wasn’t sure how useful it was. So let me try this. The Norte is a big rambling beast. It wanders around through different variations, it goes to the sea through forests, up on...

LIVE from the Camino Walking the Norte Trail: Journey Interrupted and Resumed

I think of my walks on the Norte frequently. Whenever I try to describe this Camino I always think of this phrase, “The Norte is….everything.”

LIVE from the Camino Walking the Norte Trail: Journey Interrupted and Resumed

I can really empathize. The first time I walked past La Iglesia de Santo Tomas I remember going up in the hills and through woods to Gernika. It was really pleasant. The next year at the Iglesia a local man strongly advised me not to take that route because it was filled with deep mud. There...

LIVE from the Camino Walking the Norte Trail: Journey Interrupted and Resumed

During one Camino del Norte that I walked, I traveled with a group of fellow peregrinos. We always adhered to the maxim that if one came to a crossroads on the Norte and was unsure of which way to go, one should always choose the option that went uphill.

LIVE from the Camino Walking the Norte Trail: Journey Interrupted and Resumed

During a descent into Deba on wet stones and pavement I had a memorable slip and fall. Fortunately only my feelings were hurt. It did cause me to buy shoes with better traction in Bilbao. I am glad you made it unharmed. After the fall I felt justified in using the elevators!

That is the coastal variant. I used mapy.cz to follow the route this summer based on your recommendation. Thanks👍. The coastal variant is beautiful until you get to Soto and Liencres. In the area of those two towns the scenery becomes spectacular imho.
