I would carry both app and paper. Devices can and will fail. One trip, my phone was dead for three days. When the battery was finally down to zero, then a recharge brought it back to life. Another trip I was using the Whitson Northern Caminos guidebook, and lost the book. Luckily, had the Kindle...
We did this in 2015 and 2016 and are in 70s-80s. Here is link to 2015 stages. A little complicated as we had to leave and come back. We finished Norte and did Primitivo in 2016. You could google Susan Alcorn writer for more info...
gronze.com is in Spanish, but sufficiently self explanatory ai==so that you do not need Spanish to use it. It has route maps, and lists accommodations. We used Booking.com quite a bit. We also left our hardcopy guide behind by accident, but were able to order a Kindle copy and proceed using it.
From Castro Urdiales, we had lunch in Islares, and then took the highway variant to Liendo. We used the Whitson Northern Caminos guide, the Wise Pilgrim app, and frequently checked gronze.com. This is a beautiful route if you take time to appreciate it. On any route in Europe or the United...
We have done both, 1st the Norte and then the primitive from villaviciosa. When we did the Norte, most of the pilgrims we met did not decide until they got to the split. At that point those who loved the ocean continued on the Norte and those who wanted mountains went inland.
We used the Wise Pilgrim app and the Whitson guidebook https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1852847948/?tag=casaivar02-20 The Wise Pilgrim book was not available at that time. Now there is the Wise Pilgrim book and the Village to Village guide...
There are only a few places where there are no accommodations for 10 miles or more. If in those situations you feel you cannot go quite that distance, have a taxi at the START of the day drop you off a few kilometers down the trail to the point where you can walk the rest of the way.
We stayed at Hostal Ruta Esmeralda in Baamonde. We stopped at Albergue Witericus for a snack, looked at their very nice facilities but too soon to stop so went on to Miraz where there were three places to stay. We stayed at O Abrigo, a nice new facility, and walked back to visit San Martin, the...
My thoughts, anything unmentioned is a yes.
hands free umbrella for rain/hot sun yes

I have pack cover so leaning towards the wind/rain jacket just incase the temps drop...
You clearly didn't attend one of our talks, as it wasn't close to a Sunday stroll for Susan and she makes that clear. I'll post a link to our Norte Primitivo page in a moment, but to cover some things not on that page: There are a few steep descents, but not long, and usually there is an option...
Walking the Norte made us realize that Spain is a collection of quite a few culturally different regions, Basque country, Cantabria, Asturias, Galicia and more. We just watched a movie last night that emphasized these differences. A romantic comedy that gave us some insight into the sense of...
So here are my questions:
1. What % of pavement would you estimate? Is there a guide that describes the walking surfaces?
2. Are there full days with only pavement other than the cities? Multiple all pavement days in a row?
Thanks!
Liz
My wife and I walked the Norte and Primitivo over 2015...
We walked the Norte and Primitivo in 2015 and 2016, staying in hotels or similar accommodations when we had the chance. We walk shorter distances, so would stay in an albergue when there was no other option. We did enjoy the chance to meet other pilgrims when we did that, but also enjoyed the...
For a paper guide, we used the Cicerone Northern Caminos guide for the Norte and Primitivo. We also had a copy on Kindle, that was quite helpful after we left the paper copy somewhere. The maps are easier to read on the Kindle (can zoom in). Also found the Wise Pilgrim apps for Norte and...
