When I walked up El Purgatorio on April 4th 2017 I was stunned by that first kilometer up. My pack was almost 35 lbs, and I was sidestepping up the hill like a skier! In my opinion that was the hardest kilometer I encountered on either the del Norte or the Primitivo, although there was a long...
Unfortunately, due to a combination of medical issues of my own and medical issues of my mother ( we are 73 and 93 respectively), I will be unable to do any caminos this spring. Perhaps later in the year?
its a bummer but its life here and now as it occurs!
For specifics about walking the camino del norte, I would really strongly suggest you check out Magwood‘s blog entries on walking the Camino del Norte in 2022, maximizing beach and seaside time
https://magwood.me/my-caminos/caminos-del-norte-from-bilbao-primitivo-fisterra-2022/
this lady is in...
I walked from Irun to Luarca, then took a train to Oviedo and walked the Primitivo in 2018. I am an acolyte of Magwood! I followed her suggestions to reduce road walking and maximize time spent along the sea on the Camino del Norte.
Based on my experience I would suggest walking Irun-Deba...
I walked the del Norte in 2018 and I used the information from Peregrina2000 in the thread posted above extensively. In particular I found the costal alternative from Santander to Boo to be really worthwhile
good luck!
i am planning to rewalk the del Norte from Playa la Arena to Ribadeo next...
This will be the 5th anniversary of the Camino del Norte/Primitivo/Fistera that I walked starting on April 4th 2018. The real joy of that walk was the long stretches along the bay of Biscay on the del Norte and the solitude and peace of the Camino Primitivo. This time I am hoping to do more of...
I would agree with 2 caveats. First he climb out off Irun (El Purgatorio) was for me the most demanding section of the entire Camino del Norte/Camino Primitivo/Camino fisterre that I walked in 2018, and its the first couple hours of the first day on the trail!
Second, the last day into Bilbao...
I walked the del Norte route from the French border and the cut south on the Primitivo and finished at Fisterre in April-May of 2018. I celebrated my 68th birthday in San Sebastián along the way…A life changing experience and I would highly recommend you try. I had no problems with...
What time of year? Spring or fall should be more favorable temps, but if you hate rain spring may be a poor choice. I walked the del norte from Irun to Luarca, then took the train to Oviedo and did the primitivo on to Fistera. Total of just over 1100K. Took me 42 days, but 5 of them were non...
The only thing I would say here is this: the Del Norte from Irun to Ribadeo is an endless string of beaches, most are spectacular and many are secluded and quiet. Why not let your family enjoy the beauty of Northern Spain rather than the circus complete with daily bed race that is the last 100...
I would definitely suggest you skip walking the last 10 or 15 km into Bilbao. Its probably the most boring stretch of pavement on the entire del Norte!
Rereading thru this thread, I want to do the del Norte again! I can subtract significant sections of highway from my camino last year and add more spectacular and solitary seafront time!
Amazing thread and a real resource for anyone who really is interested in the best possible Camino del...
The 2 Pdf files I used extensively were:
North Coast Alternatives. By Laura Reynolds
The Northern Ways to Santiago (English version) published by the Basque Government
And I heavily relied on the following online blog:
https://magwood.me/
I also had the most current version of the Wise...
I did the del Norte this past April/May, and one of the things I did was to do as much research as I could on alternative routes. It is possible to eliminate significant chunks of pavement and replace them with sections of beach or seaside trail walking. Particularly when leaving Santander...
I am planning on doing the Camino del Norte starting around April 7th 2018.
Any advice, information, observations, tips, etc greatly appreciated.
I have started accumulating specific gear and am walking a great deal more, in the type boots I plan to use, and I am trying to prepare physical...
