Doing Norte route - hopefully Spring or Autumn 2018 - but getting freaked out by weather...

Walked the Norte route in October,2015. The weather was excellent. We expected rain and had a very wet first day out of Irun. However, there were lots of stunning, sunny days. This is a great time of year to go.

    Le Puy Plus Norte/Primitivo

In 2015, we walked from Le Puy to SJPDP. Then we caught the bus to Bayonne, then train to St Jean de Luz. We stayed in a hotel right on the Camino at Ciboure. Only had to walk out the door and start walking. From there did Norte, down to Oviedo then my husband and friend walked the Primitivo...

Pilgrim rescued between Santoña and Noja

If I had known there was a detour I would have taken it. My husband helped pull me up and all I could do was swear all the way! He was amazing to put up with me. There's no way I would have been able to do it by myself. I'm terrified of drop offs like that.

    Walking from Bayonne to Irun

In Ciboure we stayed in Hotel La Caravelle. It is right on the Camino. Walk outside, turn left and voila! Ciboure is a short waterside walk, 10 minutes from St Jean De Luz.

Camino del Norte. Start at Irun or St Sebastian?

We walked from Ciboure/St Jean de Luz into Irun. It was a beautiful walk. Also did the Alpinista route. It was quite a steep ascent initially. There was only one other person besides us four doing this route the day we did it. It was very wet and I guess I would have preferred to do the lower...

Advice of connecting to the Camino Frances from the Camino del Norte

Yes Bill. My friend and I did it last year. We walked Camino del Norte to Llanes, then caught the train to Oviedo. From there we caught a train to Leon and another to Astorga where we started walking again. I had already walked from Le Puy so a couple of nights in Oviedo was a nice rest. My...

    One week to Deba

Hi Thornley. We actually walked into St Jean Pied de Port, then caught the bus and train to St Jean de Luz. Decided against walking from St Palais to the coast as we wanted a few rest days on the coast before starting del Norte. Had a wonderful time.

    second Camino, considering El Norte

Just walked part of the del Norte from Ciboure/St Jean de Luz to Llanes. I would definitely start in France. It was beautiful. We stayed in a lovely hotel in Ciboure, right on the route. There were some difficult parts depending which route was chosen at the time. For example, we took the...

    One week to Deba

Stayed in the albergue in San Juan in October. It was not full, but I guess in June it could be. We are all in 60s and 70s and were the first ones to arrive there. Most people walk on to San Sebastián in one day. Also, we started our walk from Ciboure/St Jean de Luz. This is an excellent place...

    Northern Camino in October

We started Camino del Norte on October 2nd from Irun. As we were walking some of the albergues were closing even though they were listed as being open on the Eroski and Gronze sites. Sometimes we checked with the tourist offices in previous towns as to whether an albergue was actually open. We...

    Exit Santander - advice?

Crossed the railway bridge yesterday along with 4 other people. It was very safe. Locals use it. However, the short route into Santillana del Mar, along the road is noisy and smelly. There seem to be numerous ways of getting to Santillana. Way marking is confusing as well.

    hostels on camino del norte

Have to put in a recommendation for the private Albergue, Solar de Hidalgos in Santillana Del Mar. Last night we paid €10 each to be in the municipal Albergue in Santander, which was awful. Tonight we are in Solar de Hidalgos. It is beautiful. We are in a room for four with our own ensuite. The...

Camino del Norte Oct 6th Bilbao

The weather has been mostly wonderful. 28degrees yesterday. Not sure about today, but quite hot. Forgot to say all the tents were full at Castro Urdiales as well. Last night in Hazas-Lienda the albergue was full.

    Walking from Bayonne to Irun

Walked from St Jean de Luz to Irun recently. It was a lovely coastal walk.

Camino del Norte Oct 6th Bilbao

The communal albergue at Castro Urdiales is full tonight. We saw more pilgrims on the way today than previous days.

    October on Norte/Primitivo

Glad to know you are safely home. Will look out for Esther. What is the site for your Primitivo blog? I must have made an error trying to access it. Miss you too. It was great to have crossed paths with you many times. Literally! I guess that is what makes the Camino so special.

    October on Norte/Primitivo

There seem to be many pelegrinos on this route. Last night in Deba, the albergue was almost full. There were others staying in pensions around town. Just a warning. If it is wet, don't follow the red/white markings (GRroute) into Deba. It is very strenuous and there has been a land slip in one...

    October on Norte/Primitivo

Hi Grayland. Nothing so good. Have only done from Le Puy to St Jean Pied de Port and will walk from Ciboure tomorrow. Thanks for your reply. You have allayed my fears about the difficult nature. On the Le Puy route we met a young man who had walked from Istanbul and was on his way back. He had...

    October on Norte/Primitivo

Have just finished walking from Le Puy to SJPDP. Now in Ciboure preparing to start Camino del Norte/Primitivo. Some questions. Have read that from Irun to San Sebastián it is not well way marked. Is this still a problem? Also, are these two routes more difficult than Le Puy to Conques? Are there...
