I found caminoguide.net really useful as you can print it out and/or view it on your iphone. It's lightweight if you print it yourself and you can discard the pages as you go.
Their website is here: http://www.viadelaplataguide.net
Andrew.
You could also try http://www.viadelaplataguide.net which is an excellent and free guide which you can download as a PDF and print on A4. It is updated frequently throughout the year so is likely to be more up to date than a book.
Andrew.
Hi Alan, sorry to hear about the river crossing. I crossed it back in the Spring and it was low, stagnant and stinking! I love the Via de la Plata at this time of year and hope that the weather is kind to you. Keep us up to date with your news.
Andrew.
I've just been talking to my wife who's been walking some of the Via de la Plata and is currently in Santiago on her way to Finisterra. I arranged to phone her at 7pm and she said she'd be the main square, Praza do Obradoiro, and hopefully I'd be able to see her on the webcam. The plan worked...
Thanks viajero. This is great news and reassuring to get it first hand. Thanks also for the heads up on the albergue in Monesterio. I'll be there in 4 weeks so I won't have to think about booking hotels. I hope the good weather stays with you but, lke you say, not so good for the farmers.
Andrew.
I don't usually book ahead but given the recent Albergue closures and the fact that we will be walking during the Easter period it's probably sensible.
As far as I know the Albergue Turisticos that have closed are Fuente de Cantos, Zafra, Puebla de Sancho Perez and Torremejia
Leaving Sevilla...
Hi Alex,
For the Via de la Plata and Camino Frances I've used http://www.caminoguide.net which gives you an up to date written guide that can be printed on A4 paper (lightweight and disposable) or downloaded to a smartphone. The guy that writes it welcomes information from pilgrims who have...
What a shame. Seems like a lose-lose situation.
I'm doing 10 days of the VdlP with my wife at Easter and was looking forward to the alburgue at Fuente de Cantos. I stayed there in 2010 and really liked it. In November 2008 is stayed at a hotel in Fuente called La fabrica. If I remember...
Hi Jennifer,
I walked from Sevilla to Canaveral last October and for a while the majority of my companions were women walking alone. No one had any problems apart from getting lost in the dark when leaving the alburgues early. Some of the distances were longer than some may have wished for...
What an excellent idea. An alternative to heavy guide books adding to the weight of a backpack. I just went and weighed my Cicerone Vdlp guidebook and it's 350 grams which is more than my waterproof coat! I walked from Sevilla to Canaveral last Autumn and my 13-14kg pack (with food and water)...
The only alburgue that I was aware of in Fuente de Cantos was the one in the converted Convent and that was an excellent place to stay 9 weeks ago.

Thanks, doing the Vdlp has rekindled my old love of photography and I'm enjoying making my first blog.
As has been said many times on this forum the lighter the pack the better. Before I left for the Vdlp I was determined to carry a light pack of around 6 kilos (without food and water). I spent...
I walked last month from Sevilla to Canaverel and most of the alburgues had blankets or duvets. One woman carried no sleeping bag and relied solely on what the alburgues had to offer and she had no problems. I can't vouch for all the alburgues but most, if not all, of those that I stayed at had...
Melanie,
I started out from Sevilla 3 weeks ago. I couldn't find any pilgrim stuff at all and I did ask around. I was told that the Amigos sell badges, shells etc but by then I'd allready left town. Check out their opening times I think they're not open that often. This is their address...
I've had to cut short my camino due to a recurring ankle problem. However, I had a great time on the VdlP from Sevile and hope that my blog conveys a little of this. I'll be doing a bit of physiotherapy and will be back on the camino when I'm ready.
I've added photos and text to my blog which...
Hello everyone,
I´m sorry it´s taken a while to get my blog up and running.
I´m currently in Almendralejo which is slightly off the Camino between Villafranca and Torremegia. It´s all going well and you can read what´s happening on my blog:
spanishfootsteps.blogspot.com
Because I can´t read...
I arrived in Savilla yesterday and will visit some of the sites today before starting on the Camino tomorrow morning. I´ll probably walk to Guillena as it looks too far to the next place. Following a reccomendation from this foum I´m staying in the Hotel Simon which is just around the corner...
Did someone recently post a list of the Lista de Correos / Poste Restantes in main towns and cities on the VdlP as I can't find it by searching. Perhaps it was on another forum?
I'd like to leave the addresses with my wife in case I need something sent out.
Andrew.
Thanks for your help everyone. It will probably be via Ourense then. I will arrive in Sevilla next Wednesday morning and will probably start walking on Thursday. I'm hoping to get my credential from the tourist office near the Cathedral , where I got my previous one in November 08. If not I'll...
