Sorry I've taken so long to reply--I've been away from here for a while. I'm so glad my albergue list was helpful.
It was great reading about your experiences. I can't imagine walking in all that heat. I'm glad you had a good few weeks, and I hope your surgery went really well!
Hi Gert,
According to my CSJ guide (it's from 2011 but I believe the general info hasn't been updated since 2004--it's only the accommodation that changes yearly), it's "extremely difficult" to walk backwards. However, there are white arrows that mark the route backwards from Gijon (don't know...
The English guidebooks tend to be out of date--written at a time when, I believe, pilgrim accommodation often involved sleeping on the floor.
That said, spring is getting busier on the Via de la Plata. There were times I'd have felt more comfortable with a mat as backup because albergue beds...
I got into Santiago at the end of May (also quite busy) and there actually seemed to be fewer people after Ourense. There were bed shortages before then, but never after. It was very strange.

Hi LT,
I'm glad you've made your decision. I am using the CSJ guide, but if there was a more thorough up-to-date option in English I'd take that. Particularly because the CSJ maps aren't helpful navigationally, and maps are really useful to have (I'm using some I found on the Internet).
Thanks...
Hi,
I'm on the VdlP right now. If you can read German, I'd get the German guidebook. I've heard wonderful things about it, and there's an up-to-date version.
I don't know when you're going, but Alison Raju has a new version of her English guidebook coming out this fall. The old one is about...
It's great to hear from all of you on other parts of the route! I've had a bit more rain, but it's now perfect spring weather here in Salamanca--even a bit chilly in the shade.
Buen Camino to everyone!
Anna-Marie
Yes, the restaurant is up and running, and the food is very good. The pilgrim's menu was 9.50 euros--just a little bit more than I've paid other places. There seems to be a really nice part in the back with linen etc (the rooms are beautiful, and show off the olive press)--but most people were...
Thanks, Laurie.
I know there are places, I just don't always get there at the right time (or am too exhausted to find them).
I'm currently using Internet at the La Almazara, the albergue just before Villafranca de los Barros, which is free (there's only one computer, but no one else seems to...
Thanks for the good wishes, everyone!
It's definitely cooler--it even looks seriously like rain, just outside Villafranca de los Barros.
Ian - If you're going to Salamanca first, maybe I'll see you in Merida!
Andy - I can hardly imagine the heat you had to deal with! I was walking a bit with...
Hi from Monesterio!
I've been walking for five days now, and it's extremely hot--the weather is crazy, as an hospitalera told me. It's been at least high 20s (Celsius)--maybe low 30s, I'm not sure. It's quite cool in the early morning, but by afternoon it's very hot walking, though it's still...
From what I understand, if any pilgrims attend the 8:30 mass in the Capilla Mayor of the Seville Cathedral, they'll now be given some sort of special blessing.

Hi Laurie,
From what I understand, the sign problems that they're fixing were in Cea. The problem was that a bar owner from Piñor was changing the arrows (in Cea) so that pilgrims would go to Piñor instead of to the Oseira monastery. Now both routes will be well way marked, and there'll be...
It looks like this problem is being fixed: http://www.laregion.es/noticia/142986/xunta/jacobea/pinor/excluyendo/oseira/. Both routes are now supposed to be clearly marked.

Hi Jennifer,
I'm another solo woman who's going to be walking the Via de la Plata this spring--starting, I think, around April 8. Maybe I'll see you there!
Buen Camino,
Anna-Marie
