LIVE from the Camino Chrissy on the Camino Sanabrés

There are quite a few of those unique churches up ahead, Chrissy. I read somewhere that they are templar churches built with outside steps to the bell tower to provide convenient look-outs for approaching raiders. One of my favourites is the church of Santiago at Terroso just before Requejo...

Demographic of VDLP pilgrim in recent years

I find that interesting. My impression of my three VdlPs is that the pilgrims were overwhelmingly male. The women I met were usually walking as a couple.

Food on the via la plata

I wrote about my experience at this restaurant after my camino in 2017. It still amuses me to read this. "I had just rolled into Rionegro. The only accommodation is the very fine albergue, and when I went in, there was a group of pilgrims sitting around the table who turned out to be Irish. It...

    New route into Guillena

I had to get across the log in 2012 with a loaded bike. But I had help from another peregrino!

    New route into Guillena

Go to the Facebook page in @Bradipus's post and there is an annotated Google satellite map. It looks as if it is a more direct route, AND with bridges.

Why so few pilgrims on the Via de la Plata? Article from local website.

Actually, Robo, I thing #1 should be Most people, when first learning about the camino, think that it is the Camino Fránces.

Biking the via de la plata

    Incidentally, Triana is in Seville.

Biking the via de la plata

I have rented several times from Triana Backpackers, which is also a great place to begin your VdlP. Just google them, they have a comprehensive web page.

Why so few pilgrims on the Via de la Plata? Article from local website.

An interesting anomaly is that the overall drop in pilgrim numbers appears be due to fewer pilgrims from the top 3 countries. Most other countries show small increases, my own included.

Why so few pilgrims on the Via de la Plata? Article from local website.

Going back to the original question. Has there been a decrease in expatriate pilgrims on the VdlP? I woulldn't expect an increase from Spanish pilgrims. The vast majority seem to prefer shorter camino fiishing in Santiago in the holidays. If only that wonderful albergue on the embalse could be...

LIVE from the Camino VDLP update feb 2024

Annie, do you mean the albergue municipal? It's the first building on the left as you enter on Calle Pablo Picasso. John mentions one on the right. I do remember that it had a very unusual interior. I seem to remember that it was converted from a utilitarian building. I'm hazy about it.

    Respectful donativo amounts in 2024

Questions on the forum usually generate a wide variety of responses. Not here. The answer to your question would seem to be either a 'yes or a 'no'. The question was "Is this amount reasonable?", not "Is this amount generous?" I would say yes to the first and no to the second. Is anyone in a...

"The Vía de la Plata is fairly flat"

Very interesting data. Is the calculation for the Francés from Roncesvalles? My gut feeling is that the Sanabres mountain climbs were much easier than the climb to O Cebreiro. But the Via a few challenges like the 10km climb to Monasterio and the one to Albergueria. The cumulative climb on the...

    Albergue La Almazara near Villafranca

The most recent review on BdotC is from Oct 2023, and there are none older than 2022. All the reviews are complementary (if that means anything) and one or two mention the restaurant on-site. It seems such an interesting place to stay, among the olive groves. I'm vaguely considering another VdlP...

    Albergue La Almazara near Villafranca

I'm curious to know if anyone has stayed at this albergue which is about 5km south of Villafranca. I was hoping to stay there on two of my caminos in 2016 and again in 2017, but on both occasions found it abandoned, and the courtyard overgrown. It was a picturesque compound, converted from an...

Fuente de cantos where to sleep

I also stayed at Hotel La Fabrica. Perfectly OK. They’re used to pilgrims.

Thoughts on walking Camino Sanabrés in June

I forgot to quote. I do recognise that heat is a different ball game for a walker. Riding a bike, you create your own breeze which makes a big difference.

Thoughts on walking Camino Sanabrés in June

One things for sure, a response to your question will never earn a green ‘SOLUTION’ banner! I’ve been on the Sanabres 3 times in June, and every one was different weather-wise. One was definitely hot, but I’m from your part of the world and I enjoyed the conditions. In 2018 I had to endure the...
