I have walked this route three times ( Seville to Santiago) and agree with you that the most memorable and enjoyable for me was the walk between A Guidina and Laza. We broke the walk into two stages by staying the night in the albergue at Campo...about the half way mark. Very pleasant albergue...
I walked it in Sept 2022 and found the albergue open and very pleasant to stay in. In 2016 the albergue was not open, so I taxied the first 8KM, then walked to Laza, a very pleasant walk. I was 69 at the time, so no problem taking a taxi if circmstances warrant. The walk to Laza is one of...
You answered your own question in the first paragragh, flexibility is the key, and sometimes even picking up some food at a local store, ( and finding one that is open) is a challenge. One day in 2022 I arrived at the hosted in Rio Negro and found that the only restaurant/bar in town, ( which I...
Take your time, plan some rest days. I have done the VLDP twice, and both times took close to 50 days....extra days in Caceres, Merida, Zafra, Salamanca, Ourense......all time well spent. Its not a race, its an experience...enjoy every moment of it....who knows when you will be back?
Having done the Sanabres route twice, in 2016 and 2018, and taking the Laza route and stopping in Lalin, I agree with Juans comments..an accurate account of that walk....arduous in parts but worth it.
I would add that be aware of the time of year you start the VLDP, the heat can be vicious in southern Spain in summer...so best to start in the Spring, ( April/May) or in the fall ( September/Oct). I have done both start times, spring and fall each have their pluses and minuses, but in both...
Yes, in 2018 started out from Seville mid Sept, arrived Santiago end of October. Weather was generally good, got cooler and a some wet days as we got into Galicia. I have also done the VDLP in the spring ( April/May 2016) and would choose the fall over the spring if I did it again. Spring had...
Hi, if you start in early April you will not have scorching temps, it will be mild and cool at times. Bring rain gear, pack cover, waterproof boots, extra socks. As I said in another response on this thread, I found April very wet, lots of showers, some days of steady rain, and lots and lots...
Hi! I walked the VLDP in 2016, starting April 3 from Seville. Bring good rain gear, we had a lot of rainy days. Also lots of water on the trail, sometimes requiring detours where streams were in flood. Footgear that is water resistant is important, and bring some extra socks, as I found...
Done the VLDP twice, once in spring, once in fall, used my sleeping bag on both, maybe a dozen times. Take a silk or lightweight liner, that you will use regularly. The sleeping bag will be used when it’s cool, and there are no extra blankets.
See you on the trail....doing VLDP again this Sept, walking out of Seville on Sept 11th. In 2016 did it April /May, looking forward to seeing it in the fall. Hopefully it will be a bit drier!
Hi! The answer is "Yes" to all your questions.
I did the VLDP in April 2016 and encountered many solo women doing the walk. Some rudimentary Spanish will get you by, take one of those little travelers phrase books. There are some excellent Apps that assist with the details of the journey (...
