    Carabiners or “S” hook?

Garden stores have very nice tree ties that are bendable, strong and padded. https://www.bunnings.co.nz/jack-7mm-x-5m-black-soft-plant-tie_p3321106

Small juicer, vegetarians and heating element?

I apologise in advance, I can't help myself. Everytime I read the heading for this thread I see "small, juicier vegetarians", not "small, juicer vegetarians". It makes me smile every time 😊😊. Thank you!

US International Phone plan or Spanish SIM card while on the Camino?

I always buy a Spanish SIM and prepay service from Vodafone Spain and usually I manage to get a data boost by topping up online so that I have either 70Gb or 100+ GB. In the past I have had a dual SIM phone but I use both SIMs at home and so I still need to swap SIM cards. This year I have a...

Small juicer, vegetarians and heating element?

Yes, I use Duolingo to learn Spanish but that seems to be aimed at Latin American Spanish. Duolingo uses jugo for juice. When I asked for jugo de naranja in Spain I was corrected and told that zumo is the correct word.

Am I the only one perplexed by WhatsApp?

Rick beat me to the keyboard this time 😊😊

Am I the only one perplexed by WhatsApp?

As in many other areas @peregrina2000 is correct. 😎 When I read further down in the Wikipedia entry I saw that she is correct and mobile phone numbers in Spain can start with either 6 or 7.

Am I the only one perplexed by WhatsApp?

Yes, WhatsApp will only allow you to call someone who is already in your contacts (there are ways around this but again, for simplicity, just figure that someone that you call must already be in your list of contacts). I am not sure if you have an Apple iPhone or an Android phone. I have an...

Am I the only one perplexed by WhatsApp?

You haven't provided much information and that makes it very difficult to figure out what your problems might be. A WhatsApp call may go unanswered for many reasons including you calling at a time when the person receiving your call is asleep because they are in a different time zone. If you...

    Rain Pants?

    Don't forget your crampons.

    Rain Pants?

The only time that I would wear rain pants while out hiking would be to protect my lower body from a very cold wind rather than rain and even then there would need to be snow or ice on the ground. You are very unlikely to encounter this on the Portuguese Camino.

    SIM card for Europe

Doug, I purposely didn't mention the mandated requirements. My understanding, and this may be wrong (I am sure that @Kathar1na will jump in to support you), is that the mandates only apply to voice not data. Customer pressure is just as effective, sometimes more, than mandates.

    SIM card for Europe

Your research is incomplete. People in Europe travel extensively between countries in the EU. This is not a recent thing and it certainly didn't start when eSIMs were introduced. Most plans purchased from the major telecommunications companies in any country in Europe will allow for the phone...

May-June Camino Frances - Rain Gear & Eating ware

No raincoat or poncho is going to keep you and your clothes dry for anything more than 10 minutes of decent rain. Instead of a raincoat I take a very lightweight shell jacket to keep most of the wind out and quick drying tops. At that time of year I wear shorts because skin is waterproof. Do...

    Trekking Poles

Often they are sold in pairs but I only ever use one. For me, the additional utility of one pole is worth the extra weight, extra thing to carry around with me that is an awkward shape and might get left behind. The second pole does add utility but, for me, not enough extra utility to cancel...

Bikini or not bikini, right now, Frances route

Ahh! Now I understand, I always thought that people I encountered out hiking that day were somehow all celebrating my birthday with me, of course, in our birthday suits!

Bikini or not bikini, right now, Frances route

Keep those Northern California thoughts to yourself! 😎🌊 It is never too cold to swim here in the land of Kiwis 🩴❄️ 😊🥝😊

    Albergue pillows

Stuff your pillowcase with clothes or other non-noisy items from your pack to create your own pillow. Personally, I wouldn't choose to rest my head and face on a pillowcase treated with a powerful insecticide every night. But you are, of course, free to choose your own path in life.

Should I bring my own Mercado bag?

I take my trusty Bunnings shopping bag https://www.bunnings.co.nz/bunnings-compact-bag_p8510165?store=9491&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwYSwBhDcARIsAOyL0fg1KJcU7Ixe-_f8jUOO_-uvtGUN7vFHJUars3tPQ2erbLtCydUJ8hEaAuMiEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds Doesn't crinkle and wake sleeping pilgrims, lightweight and has...
