8 caminos later, I finally figured it out.
Buy two pairs of the lightest, most ventilated shoes you can find. Preferably different from each other. I like generic slip-on athletic shoes. And I like the Norvan from Arc'teryx very much.

Poles may work for some people but I find them a real hassle and unnecessary (for me). Two more things to forget or lose and there is always something in your hands when you need your hands free. I tried poles and I prefer life without!
I used an umbrella and combined it with rain pants and waterproof/breathable socks (Sealskinz) on really wet days. I packed an over-the-pack poncho but never used it. "Euroschirm" is the umbrella and so nice to keep the water from ever contacting you, because as it has been mentioned any barrier...

Here are some things that have worked well on my past 4 Caminos:
1. Credencial. Order by mail before you leave home, saves hassle on arriving. I have gotten them from St. James Confraternity online.
2. Order some Euro cash from your bank at home before you leave. Saves panic...
I discovered a brand called Extenex that I have used and loved. Hard to explain easily but they have "lumps" in them that allow you to preset the tension in each segment of the lacing. Love them!!!
One thing I do that helps a lot is periodically let the pack straps slide back down my arms to create a large gap between the pack and my back, kind of "hinging" the pack back on the waist belt, thus letting the wind and sun dry off my sweaty back. I can do this without stopping and let the...
