Packing hack and List for the VDLP March/April

I made a few ultra light drawstring bags out very lightweight woven fabric. If you dont sew try using those new recyckable produce bags. They may not be strong, but would keep your socks and underwear together so they dont hit the floor when you unpack. A large ziplock bag works well to keep...

    Borrow shoes and backpack

I find that if i get a 38 or 40, depending on style, 'youth' (boys) shoe it fits, is wide enough etc. Id never find a mens small enough in Canada. I think it is about a 7 1/2 womens. Also for hiking do the cross country ski test. I crouch in my boots if my toes hit the top hard or the front...

Women over 60 who DON'T take a sleeping bag...

i used a different option hiking from Leon to Santiago during one of the cold snaps several years back. At 66 then i needed a bit of warmth. Before leaving home i checked that my polar fleece poncho could double as a blanket. That wasn't quite warm enough so i added my rain poncho knotted at...

    Back Pack for ultra light

Osprey makes a 16 liter that I used. Take your stuff to the store that you are planning on using. If going in warmer months consider ditching jacket and sleeping bag for polar fleece poncho that can serve as blanket and jacket. Weigh items and poncho to see if it saves weight.

more on backpacks size vs weight

I took a 16 liter osprey. No sleeping bag. A sleep sheet sack and used my polar fleece and rain ponchos during day if read and then at night for sleeping. The small size pack made sure I didn't add extra. I had a nylon shopping bag for food that I picked up as needed. It fit inside a closed...

Day pack essentials (luggage sent ahead every morning)

So if you have all those things in your day pack, only thing left to ship is your sleeps sack? I had a 16 Litre osprey. It was adequate. It held almost everything you had in your day pack: plus cell phone charger and my sleep sack. I didn't need anything else. And somethings suggested in...

    Perfect socks

I was recovering from surgery on two toes and have a bad hip. I walked slow. So about 24 days to cover the 300 k. Somedays i only walked 5. One day 22 and then i needed a rest day. I didnt do that again.

    Perfect socks

How about lama if you are allergic to sheeps wool. i bought some knee socks in Ecuador. They felt so nice i bought ankle height ones on-line before hiking the camino last year. Nary a blister and so soft on my feet. I definitely wouldn't put them in the dryer. I washed them out each day on...

What's wrong with my hiking pole?

Just clean it up with a damp paper towel. Use a bit of rubbing alcohol if needed. IF it then looks the same as the others you know what is wrong. Something got spilled on it or it got in a mud puddle or . . . If it doesn't look the same take it back to the store. IT should still...

    70L pack overkill?

Ditch the big one: take the day pack. I took a 16 litre Osprey. It was stuffed put adequate. I was carrying two pounds of meds [including special meal supplements] along with my clothes etc.

    Perfect socks

i bought socks made of Llama wool on-line. Midweight, just above ankle. took 2 pairs. They dried over-night without a problem. Much softer than any of the Smart Wool or other socks in the stores. No blister despite soft untrained feet. I only did the last 300k from Leon, however. They show...

May - sleeping bag or Liner

i packed a silk liner and a polar fleece and rain poncho. The later two i sewed for my shorter frame. Big reduction in weight as both ponchos were my jacket and sweater either individually or together. One night after being cold once or twice i figured out how to sandwich the three together to...

    voltage adaptor for phone charger

Thank you. i like this option and sort of what i hoped for. What should be happening in Victoria and what is aren't the same. I checked pretty well everywhere to day either i person or by phone - only the convertors are available. They are heavy and expensive. The option of just buying a...

    voltage adaptor for phone charger

I have spent the good part of a day looking for adapters in Victoria BC. None of the lighter weight adapters - my cellphone charger will convert either European or Canadian Current -- appear to be available. All that is available is converters that are running over $30 and are heavy. Am i...
