I used hydration packs for a couple of years but went back to bottles because the water from
bladders tasted plasticky to me. I cleaned the bladders constantly but still got that taste and couldn't tolerate it any more. Water from bottles doesn't taste that way to me.
Hi all, Just wondering in anyone is using Frogg Toggs or the essentially similar Dri Ducks on the El Camino for rain gear. One time I used them all day in rain for trail hiking in the San Francisco bay area where and they performed surprisingly well. However I have never used them day after day...
I know some of the so called "experts" say that running shoes are not right for walking, but I don't believe it. I have been using trail running shoes as hiking shoes for 15 years going up and down very rocky 11-1200 ft mountains here in Northern California and I am happy with them in that...
The subject of this post is that marvelous piece of gear called the Buff, which incidentally is made in Spain, which somehow makes it even more appropriate for the El Camino. There are many types of Buffs, the UV Buff, the Reflective Buff, the Insect Shield Buff, the Wool Buff, but I went with...
I understand that in a country as big as Spain there are different climate zones, but it is my understanding that most of the Camino Frances, with the exception of the mountains, is in what is considered a Mediterranean climate zone by meteorologists. I'll bet you didn't know that Sacramento...
I hope this is the right forum for this, apologize if it isn't. I was out hiking today here in Northern California (which incidentally has about the same Mediterranean climate as the El Camino) The temperature was 95 F which is about 35 C for the Euros. I was wearing my favorite hat, the...
Hi Jeff,
I had some Merrill Moab Ventilators about 3-4 years ago that I used for hiking here in Northern California over some trails there were probably much rockier than the Camino. Yes, smallish toebox, but I had the normal width and I understand they come in a wide size which would probably...
Thanks. Good suggestions. The guy at REI, where I bought my pack, had a good idea also. Since the straps on my pack don't tuck away, he suggested to put the rain cover on backwards. Tuck the straps behind the rain cover and tie or strap the rain cover on. That way the straps won't catch on anything
Thanks. Yes I always use hiking poles for my hikes in the mountains here in Northern California. Interestingly, I ordered some Pacer Poles from England a year ago and they shipped them all the way from England to Sacramento CA in a mesh bag. they survived the trip with no damage.
I like your...
I am traveling from Sacramento California. I just bought a 40L pack. I think it is carry on compatible judging from the measurements and what they told me where I bought it (Sacramento REI)
Hi all. It seems to me that having a carry on pack would be desirable. I am thinking of purchasing the REI Trail 40 (see link below) because I have heard through anecdotal information that this pack is carry on compatible, but I don't know for sure. But in any case is carry on desirable? It...
Hi all, I would like to make a shoe recommendation. I have not hiked the El Camino yet, but plan to in the future when I retire. However I am an ardent hiker and backpacker here in Northern California and average about 35-40 miles a week on some pretty rocky trails..
I have used only trail...
