Maybe buy 2 small unlocked phones and then just buy sim cards when you get to Europe. I bought a 10 Euro Vodafone simcard in the Netherlands and it lasted me months. It even worked great for texts on the Camino! Check out my blog post about my first day on the Camino and have the best time ever...

It's small, lightweight, and you can send videos straight to your phone via wifi :)
I think bringing your iphone and getting an international sim is the best option. you can take photos with your phone and call your loved ones too! If you're worried about being on your phone too much just turn it off and throw it in the bottom of your bag :) check out my blog.
