    Sunglasses

https://www.aao.org/eye-health/diseases/top-sunglasses-tips Couple of thoughts from US optometrist association. Mirror the sun safe recommendations in Oz. Contrary to other comments, blocking UV is the biggest consideration. Buen camino

My sleeping bag is too tight

Hola @falconbrother Having just completed the CF (again) in July last year, my experience was that I didn’t need a sleeping bag. I only used a sleeping bag liner (cotton-silk blend). I carried “The Lazy Bear” Down Camping Blanket. As my mates kept reminding/asking me was I carrying just to...

    Pocket knives on trains

This is an old thread, but thought I’d update with current experience for those scanning through. Things have changed in our World. Security has been ramped up, particularly around knives and scissors carried on trains in Spain from certain places. Recently caught the train from Santiago to...

    Managing electronics

Hola @Kathy F. have simplified my electronics down to: - iPhone - Garmin watch; and - small power pack This means I only need to take a 4 USB outlet/plug (bought one in Paris) plus 2 cables: - Garmin watch cable: and - a single multi-plug cable (micro, USB-C, Apple Lightning). I use the 4...

    Wearing glasses when it rains

@Luka I tried one of these. It was as good as useless. Personally I use a hiking Umbrella (extendable arm) that attaches to my shoulder strap and ties into my hip belt. Expensive, maybe (€40). But for those of us who have to travel distances to get to Spain (or, or the like) expense is a...

    "Itchy" backpack straps

Similar to the ones I purchased. Had the same issue with the width. Have punched some shoe eyelets (3 points - 6 eyelets in total on each cover) into the velcro parts and laced them up. That has worked a treat for me.

    "Itchy" backpack straps

Hi @Camino Chrissy I similarly had these (those) types of problems with my Osprey backpack. A good friend suggested using lambs wool car seat strap covers. Since using them the problem seems to have disappeared. Just finished 5 back to back Caminos (~1k km) without issue. The covers need...

Say No! to rubber tips on your poles.

Can you convince me NOT to take paper copies?

Hi I just walked the Invierno, paperless. No need for paper on that Camino, the paths are very well marked. Used Wise Pilgrim Guide successfully without dropping phone. Have a phone case which I tether to my back shoulder straps. Can’t comment on the Plata. Regarding the Muxia route, you...

Say No! to rubber tips on your poles.

OMG…love inconsiderate pilgrims… Let’s not consider the locals who have to listen to the constant clicking of poles by inconsiderate pilgrims walking through towns. If you’re in rough terrain that necessitates removing a rubber foot, remove it. But replace it when you’re back on flat terrain...

    Towel - which size?

Hi @Maurice Frank, which ever towel you choose, if you want to see if you will be happy with it, use it at home before you go. Use it for 2 weeks, don’t wash it, hang it up over night on the end of your bed or on a clothes rack, each morning you have to roll it up and put it into its carry bag...

Best backpack for neck injury ?

Hi @Artykat, given the nature of your injury I’d suggest that you may need to talk to a specialist medical practioner before sourcing a backpack. Anything that involves deterioration in the spine or associated muscular network should be managed with the help of those specialists. Their guidance...

Share your backpack choice with your body info!

Hi @kcorbharas do you like top loading backpacks, side access backpacks or clamshell (front loading/uzip) backpacks? Are you planning to carry your pack or use couriers (daily or occasionally)? Do you like stuff hanging off your backpack and/or do you want room to stow your food? The reason...

    New backpack strange.

Hoverglide are the makers. Has been in production for about 5 or 6 years. Haven’t tried it myself, but would be interested to hear from anyone who has, particularly in rough terrain where you’re typically are not looking for your pack to shift on your back?

Euro Phone Charger with Dual Output

Hi Robbo Have been using a Lifetron 4 USB port travel adapter on our CF. Works perfectly for phone, headlamp and earphones (noise cancelling). Also brought with me an Anker power/battery which I have dutifully carried and charged, without ever using. All the public (and private) albergues...

Packing List : T shirts : Merino wool or synthetic quick dry ?

Just about every albergue has washing machines and drying machines these days. What ever you choose please don’t wash your clothes in the shower, or the bathroom sink. Not withstanding what some of our learned members may suggest. It is not really appreciated in the Albergues.

Packing List : T shirts : Merino wool or synthetic quick dry ?

Just think long and hard before you wash your clothes in the shower. Who was in it before you? What did they do in the shower (potentially relieved themselves of bodily fluids)? I’d strongly recommend you take a pair of thongs/flip flops/jandles and wear them around the Albergues. When you go...

Packing List : T shirts : Merino wool or synthetic quick dry ?

Think the glove call is a good one. Make them light weight. It’s cool (10°C) every morning through to 10am. I have a pair of “élé men terre”. As for the soxes and jocks decision 3 pairs is plenty. Heaps of opportunities to wash and dry. Most Albergues seem to have washing and drying (if needed)...
