Buen camino!
Camino Frances
Villafranca Montes de Oca
February 25, 2006
Bundling up for a snowstorm plastic bags over sox served as makeshift gaiters, but the snow reached mid-shin!
Your brother must be prepared for ice, cold and storms.
Difficult CF stretches after storms could be; the Valcarlos route up to Roncesvalles (the Napoleon route is closed from November to April), across the Montes de Oca from Villafranca, Najera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Monte Irago and...
Since I always walked in late autumn and/or winter my tenue de soirée or so-called "evening attire" included loose socks, fleece pants and short sleeved technical tee shirt covered by a long sleeve technical shirt. Often those albergues which were open from November to March had NO heat. When it...
During earlier years when I walked in winter I stayed in municipal albergues and used a lightweight sleeping bag ecumenically named Little Buddha and separate polyester liner.
There was no norm in the fittings of albergues; some had heat, others heat partially and some no heat at all.
.
In cold...
Google the terms Pamplona and Correos. You will see a list of the relevant Spanish post offices and their hours. Some are closed until Monday others open. Good luck.
Throughout most of Europe reflective vests are generally sold in large gas stations. Inexpensive and lightweight they are always available in stops which cater to long distance truckers such as the routiers in France....Wear them wherever you may be walking .
For more on reflective vests see...
There is something very comforting in slipping into your own bag and liner every night. That way you know that you are within your own "dirt" and not directly exposed to what others may have left. Years past walking in late autumn/winter I always carried a lightweight sleeping bag and liner.
Walking late autumn/winter I carried simple sandals for relaxing and wore Gore-tex lined hiking boots from Decathlon . Each pair easily lasted 2 caminos walking from SJPdP to Santiago plus either out to Finisterre/Muxia or down to the Portuguese border at Valenca do Mino. Thus the boots easily...
Rodney Kent,
My coil water heater came from a Darty store in Paris and the dishwasher proof plastic cup was bought many years ago when traveling in Auckland.
These simple items can help make your journey so much more comfortable especially when/where many seasonal restos/bars will be...
Walking in late autumn/winter on the CF I always wore waterproof Goretex lined boots with wool hiking socks and never had a blister.
After a shower I would wear indoors my "evening attire";
clean underwear,
runner's winter tights,
short sleeve technical tee shirt,
long sleeve technical tee...
During my first caminos my husband and I communicated when necessary by land-line telephone; since 2008 I carried a smartphone which also served as camera+computer on which I wrote my daily blogs then using Blogspot
Since we both were then in our 70's whilst apart we texted each other good...
Other than a smartphone of all the possible gadgets that one might consider carrying on the camino the most useful for me is an immersion water heating coil.
I first saw this in 2005 in the old Valcarlos albergue which had no kitchen. Late one rainy chilly autumn afternoon an older French...
dgbullock,
Indeed , it is pleasant/easy to continue "the trail" onward directly from Decatlon Easy to Ayegui, the famous wine fountain and the splendid Irache Monastery.
Happy shopping and Buen camino
Pelerine,
Of course Yak trex "just" help a boot to grip ice in winter. I consider them as a possibility for winter use and not for keeping féet dry. Sorry that my post was unclear. Mea culpa.
n a winter storm gaiters can be very useful to keep snow out of the top of your boots. However in an emergency plastic bags over your socks work almost as well. Yak-traxs can also be very useful. See more here. https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/yak-trax.44591/
