Same here. I was all gungho to get something frameless and ultralight, but I found that the framed and supposedly too-heavy Osprey kyte was so comfortable I could forget within seconds that I was carrying anything, which never happened with any of the ultralights, alas.
Another fan of ziplock freezer bags here. No rustle. And I followed the advice posted here a long time ago to invest in a trash compactor bag as a pack liner. Also no rustle, much too heavy for that. I walked in the rain all day every day for two weeks with no problems with dampness in my pack.
While I love, love, love my pacer poles, this part:
alas is not exactly accurate. I was walking in France and it had been raining for weeks, lots of flooding. Walking through the forest the rain had scooped out a hidden trough under the leaves and my pole and left foot went into it and down I...
I also loved my Kyte 36. I tried several lighter bags, but the Kyte was the only one that let me forget immediately that I was wearing it. But that doesn't mean someone else will feel the same. It's a very personal decision.
I would get the alloy poles rather than the carbon fiber version, but I don't think 120 kg would be a problem with pacer poles. And yes, the mechanics are different from regular poles.
That's basically what my Osprey Kyte 36 weighs (1.45 kg), and it's totally comfortable for me, much more so than any of the lighter packs I tried. I don't see this as a problem as long as you don't over pack it.
I have a Sea to Summit down sleeping bag that weighs less than 8 oz and packs down to about the size of a water bottle, but it was very expensive (at least to me). I think you can find down quilts inexpensively that will do just as well for much less money and just a little more bulk. Try...
I would have to guess that this is the same inner cellphone pocket my regular macabis have inside the left pocket. I have a fairly new skirt but the phone pocket is still more suitable for a flip phone than a smart phone, and I would have to guess the short macabi is going to be the same, most...
My Osprey Kyte was heavier than the other packs I tried, but it was the only one that was so comfortable I could immediately forget I was wearing it, even when it was fully loaded. There's more to consider than actual pack weight.
Personally, I think iBooks is the worst PDF reader. It's well worth investing a couple of bucks in an app such as goodreader, which also lets you make notes and annotations, besides having much better PDFs display than iBooks does. FWIW, you can also open PDFs in safari if you like.
I find that New Balance is quite small in the toe box compared to Keen. I'm very splay-footed and I couldn't find anything in New Balance that was wide enough in the toe area without slipping horribly on the heel. Keens work great for me.
I have the 36L Kyte and like it very much. But all the women's osprey packs come in S/M and M/L with the torso length being the main difference. It would be good to try to get to a store where you can try them on.
If you find the women's Osprey's too wide in the shoulders, try Gregory instead.
What matters is that the bag is comfortable. I went in planning to buy the Tempest (women's version of Talon), but it wasn't nearly as comfortable as the Kyte, which does weigh more. You can make too much of a fetish of lightweight, and there is a tendency to do that here, I think. The frame...
I have the 36 and I really can't say that has bothered me, possibly because I didn't have anything to compare it to, but in any event I've been quite happy with it.
It could also be because I walk in a macabi, so I have plenty of pocket space in that.
Agree. The REI nearest me offers seminars on walking the Camino and I found that everyone I dealt with there had a very good understanding of how it's different from wilderness hiking.
They went immediately for the ~30L bags and I wound up with a Kyte. They started me with a 30L Gregory, but of...
The "art silk" doesn't have the same qualities of keeping you cool in warm weather and warm in cool weather. Get the real silk unless you have ethical problems with animal-based products.
I also bought my silk liner from them and have been very happy, although it does tend to climate stain in...
