Having done both recently, the Portugues is a much easier option. If you take the Variante Espiritual on the Portugues you will find a long ascent and descent on that route, but otherwise the Portugues is a gentle route. Alone on Camino Primitivo September 2016
I did the Primitivo in May and found it very well signposted. I always think I'm going to need detailed maps, GPS and a compass but in reality the yellow arrows and scallop shells point you to Santiago without a problem. How necessary is a full-fledged guidebook?
I did the Primitivo last month and used photocopies of a guidebook - the Cicerone Guide. This approach has the advantage of being able to throw away pages after you've done that bit of the route so your pack gets ever so slightly lighter each day!
