I agree with the comment about avoiding joining the Frances until the last few kms., if possible. I really enjoyed walking the Primitivo - beautiful scenery, peaceful and serene. I knew that other people were walking, because I would meet them at the albergues each afternoon/evening. Other...
I stayed there and thought it was lovely. However, I was lucky enough that they put me in a separate area near the steamroom (2 rooms of 4 bunks sharing a bathroom and I was the only one there). The "regular" area looked fine, with cubicles that had privacy curtains.
Last year, in July, I found the last leg from Melide to Santiago was extremely crowded. Of course we were all trying to make it to Santiago for St. James' Day, but it looked like a conveyor belt of people on the trail. Coming off of the Primitivo at Melide was a huge shock. The Primitivo had...
In all of the albergues that I stayed in, from Oviedo to Santiago, blankets were readily available. I did not need a sleeping bag (I used a silk liner). Accommodation was easy to find, and I was only walking 15-25 km. daily. Carry water - there are definitely sections of the route where you...
I had the same itinerary as you when I walked last summer, and I am a wee bit younger so good on you. I did find that there were very few "older" people walking the Primitivo. I think that there is a perception that it is a difficult route, and it needn't be if you shorten some of the stages...
I booked it in advance about two weeks ahead, but I could have done it the evening before. As I walked, a few things changed and I needed to change the location of where my bag would be dropped off/picked up, which I was able to do the evening before. When you go to their website, it will give...
I used Correos and it was extremely easy, and worked like a charm. I organized everything online. I had to make some changes, and it was no problem. I even forgot an item at one place, and they were able to transport it to the next place for me along with my bag. I would certainly recommend...
No, you don't have to be terrified. I did not take the Hospitales route (heavy fog, and the local bar keeper did not recommend it) though, and I believe that would be the most difficult day. The Primitivo is a beautiful route, and I enjoyed the fact that there were far fewer pilgrims walking...
I walked the Primitivo in July. If you can get a taxi to the corner of Calle Soto de Barco and Calle Muros del Nalón, you are at the outskirts of the city. There is a walking path beside Calle Soto de Barco, and you should be able to see the signage of the Camino. Hope this helps. Enjoy your...
So much useful information - thank you! I knew that I was taking my hiking boots, as I have had ankle issues in the past. I have some water treatment tablets - hadn't thought about using them but I will now. And I just went out to get some electrolyte tablets. The heads-up about the lack of...
I couldn't find any information on Campiello, but Alsa runs a bus from Pola de Allande to Berducedo at around 17:45 (may not be every day), and from Berducedo to Grandas around 18:55.
