We' re walking from Porto to Santiago starting on April 14th. Given albergues only allow one night accommodation and we wish to stay a second night in Ponte de Lima, we would welcome any advice on reasonable accommodation alternatives there. We will be in P de L around 18 & 19 April and have looked at Brierley's guide options and on checking his 'popular' Hotel Imperio de Minho find it is already booked fully for these dates and also note "violin patrick" (CSJ Forum) says Pensao Beira Rio (another Brierley entry) is "dodgy". On checking up on Brierley's Pensaos on-line, there seems scant information let alone booking opportunities and it's all in Portuguese anyway (not a language we senior Aussies are strong in!). All suggestions and advice much appreciated. Buen Camino, Peter & Carmel.

Hi, my diary for 20 May 2012, in Ponte da Lima, reads: "one man approached us re: accom, so we went to see, and have got lovely rooms in centre of town with private bathrooms, clean and spacious - E30 double and E20 single. The others had to wait till 5pm for the albergue to open, so had to wander around town carrying their backpacks all day . . . ". I think the rooms were owned by the big, popular restaurant in the centre of the riverfront road (Av D. Luis Filipe), the Restaurant Encanada, so ask in there. Jill.

In 2009 when walking from Porto we stayed in a pleasant youth hostel in Ponte de Lima, not far from the river. I do not think these hostels have a one-night rule. The town is popular with tourists especially when there is a fair on. Laurie

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
I agree with Jill. This fellow stops lots of pilgrims on the way into town and tries to persuade them to use that accommodation. There's also a Parador Hotel in the town. Check Day 5 of my diary on my web site http://www.calig.co.uk/camino_de_santiago.htm where you can download the diary in Word format [or check the 700 photo's!!].

Stephen.

Dear Jill, Laurie, and Stephen, many thanks for your feedback and suggestions in response to our question re accommodation in Ponte de Lima. We've noted them in our guide book and as such your names will 'walk' with us. Stephen, your diary and photos are incredible - as we say in Australia: 'Good on You!' Peter & Carmel.

On second thought, I think the hostel may be open. It may have been closed for renovation when we were there. The tourist center was surprised that it wasn't open.

Basically, I don't know. Sorry.
