Hello fellow Pilgrims,

My name is Elizabeth and I have just joined this forum.

This is a very useful thread in order to see if anyone else is starting on the same day........thank you!

All going to plan (and final preparations going accordingly) I shall be arriving in SJPP on Monday 16th May and intend to start my Camino (first time) on Tuesday 17th May.

By the looks of it - there may be a couple of others starting the same day Maybe see you en route!

Best wishes and Buen Camino,
Elizabeth

I'm leaving May 29 th from St Jean...booked in at Orrison for the 29 th.
Getting a little nervous about making my trains from Paris. Arriving in Paris from Toronto at 8:45 am. Train from airport to Bordeaux at 10:16 - 14:37 Bordeaux to Bayonne 15:51 - 17:32 then Bayonne to St. Jean 18:06 - 1912 . A long night and day. Finding the correct trains etc also finding my way to Hotel Camou from the train. Not usually nervous just with language barriers no French or Spanish. Will this be difficult ???

To make your travels as simple as possible --
1 Here is a map/plan of CDG airport and where to find the TGV station for the train to Bordeaux.
2 Many tv-like screens list arriving /departing trains by number/destination/platform in all French railroad stations. Know your train number to learn the platform which is quai in French.
3. Hit here for a Google map marking the locations of the SJPdP station and your hotel so that you can easily navigate through the town.

Most importantly relax and enjoy your new adventure. You might spot other pilgrims on your trains who will be eager to chat.

Bon voyage and Buen camino!

I wondered if anyone was arriving at Biarritz on Monday 16th and was wanting to share a taxi to SJPP?

My flight arrives quite late in order for me to get the train from Bayonne to SJPP.

I wish I was retiring soon, but it's going to be a few years yet. We just finished our first 24km walk today with full packs and all went well - no blisters! I just learned tonight that a reservation is highly recommended so I started calling around and the Beilari was at the top of my list. Sadly, it's booked for the 12th as was every other place I called that does reservations. I finally got a bed at "la Coquille Napoleon" which is on the way out of town. I read somewhere that it's a nice place to stay and sits right on the Camino. I do wish that I could stay in town before having to head out (and up?) but now I'm looking into the possibility of travelling to SJPP and saving some time...I'm a bit behind in my planning as you can tell but I'm not big on planning when I travel and it all somehow works out in the end.

I think I will be in sjpp on the 11th as well and have no reservation for that night, just planning to get a bed somewhere. Will you walk back into town to start your walk on the 13th or just head out your door and turn south towards Spain?

Hi DeadFred and all,

I will board the plane late tonight and will be heading to Europe...

I will travel via Cannes (to see family who are attending the Film Festival) , Barcelona (to see friends) and then Pamplona before arriving at SJPdP on 13th May to start walking on 14th May.

It looks like my start date needs a little amendment on the calendar.

Thank you, DeadFred!

Please add me to the list. I've just joined today and plan to fly to Madrid from Melbourne and walk from Leon to Santiago around June 20th. I have so much to learn by then and will very much be relying on this forum for information and confidence to go it alone.

Hi Fred, have a great camino. All the best from Stephen milligan glasgow.

I am in Pamplona, picked up my rental bike and ready to ride Monday morning.

Today I am in Azura. I have 40 km to go to reach Santiago. I am confident I will make it, by Wednesday and my Fight out isn't until Saturday.

I took the trail with my Mountain bike from Pamplona to just past Cirauqui. I crashed big time on a Roman road with my bike and bruised my hip. Then the washed out bridge, which was more like 3-foot block steps down a gulley and the block steps up made getting my bike up really hard. After I got up, I found more Roman road and walked the bike until I got to a park next to the N-111. It was a no-brainer to take the road into Estella. That is when I first abandoned MTB-riding the trail.

Then the weather started to go bad. I tried a short stretch, but the mud was bad. So in the rain I stayed with roads rather than muddy paths. I had a limited amount of Flex/weather/recovery/tourist days. I kept up my schedule (usually 40 to 60 km/day) until I got to Sahagun. At that point the weather just got to me. I took my bike on the train from Sahagun to Leon and took a break to recover and be a tourist in Leon. That really emotionally helped.

I checked the weather forecast, a lot more days of rain. So I did some soul searching as to what I wanted to do. I opted for plan B, another train ticket, but from Leon to Ponferrada. I get my 200+km bike Compestela and I broke the remaining rainy days into much shorter rides, that gave me time to recover, get dry, wash clothes, talk to people, see churches and towns and again enjoy myself.

The weather has recently turned nice again, but I know I made the right decision for me. I understand the Catholic concept of a veil of tears, I can do endurance events, but I wanted something else from my Camino. I wanted "a balance" of religious experiences, physical challenge, comradery and tourism. I think I found it.

Buen Camino!
