Camino Frances Sept/Oct (2013), Finisterre/Muxia Oct (2013), Camino Frances and on to Finisterre Sept/Oct (2016)
Hi - I will be arriving on Thursday 5th September on the 12:27 train from Paris, getting into Bayonne at 17:58. The train for SJPDP leaves at 18:07. Can I make it, or is anyone else going to be on that train who would be interested in sharing a taxi? I'm trying to figure my options. Thanks

As long as you are not transporting a bike you WILL have time in Bayonne to make the connecting train to SJPdP. Be sure to purchase the ticket to SJPdP at the same time in Paris that you purchase your TGV ticket to Bayonne. There are NO reserved seats on the train to SJPdP; seating is open as on a tram or metro. Generally the SJPdP train waits for the TGV train to arrive and pilgrims to disembark and connect before setting off.

The Bayonne rr station is small and easily navigable; the staff is helpful and serves multitudes of tourists and pilgrims each year. If by chance the TGV train from Paris is late and you miss your connection go to the station master's office with your tickets and ask for assistance. During past caminos this has happened to me twice; once because of ice on the tracks and once because a cow was stuck between the rails. Both times the SNCF provided and PAID for our shared pilgrim taxi to SJPdP.

Great, this makes me feel more at ease about booking my connecting train from Bayonne to SJPdP rather than staying a night in Bayonne. Knowing now that it tends to wait for the TGV from Paris to arrive. Mine is due to get in about 17:30 and then the next at 18:07 to SJPdP.

We also are travelling from Paris to Bayonne on the 5th September, but on a slightly earlier TGV train - but not early enough to get the first train to SJPP - so will be on 18.07, same as you. We will keep an eye out for you. Bayonne will know if the TGV is on time, so we could be there to whisk you away to the SJPP train - we will have sussed it out earlier. We are recognisable as Aussies.

Hi Tony and Soos - I'm delighted to hear you will be waiting for me at Bayonne! By then I will be about 40 hours into my trip from upstate New York via Brussels and Paris (cheap flight), and a mad dash across Paris from Gare du Nord to Monparnasse. Your trip must be even longer though. I'll be the one with grey hair, looking more than slightly travel worn, wearing an old reddish Rivendell pack. Thanks for responding - see you then - Cherry

Hi - Line 4, the Magenta Line, worked fine. Only problems - waiting in line behind others to buy Metro ticket at Nord - I watched the minutes racing by as those unfamiliar with euros and French struggled with the ticket machines (try not to stand in line behind obvious tourists). I had gone over the interactive maps of both stations so I knew where I was going (I thought), but the series of long passageways, escalators, etc in Monparnasse were never ending. I made the train with about 4 minutes to spare. I think it must have taken me at least ten or fifteen minutes to negotiate from the Metro stop to the platform for the train. You need to follow the signs for the Grande Lignes (major routes as distinct from local trains which are in a different part of the station). Bayonne was not listed as a destination on the big boards - in panic I asked some guards and taking pity on my disheveled state they courteously directed me towards the correct train. When are you planning on going? I can give more details if you find you need them. Buen camino

Cherrys, thanks for the information. We will be traveling from Brussels on April 10th. We pulled up the interactive map and it was a great help. We'll have a couple hours to get from Nord to Monparnasse and then plan to spend the night in Bayonne, and then another night in SJPP.
