Camino Primitivo/Portuguese/Frances in October.

Regarding the boots vs shoes question - I can't offer a comparison as I've never worn boots. I don't think they are necessary on the Primitivo.

The Camino is rarely desolate. Even in October you will find people on Primitivo, maybe even me this year depending on how fast I motor through the Frances stages of my Camino this year. I wouldn't worry about being the only person on that route, it's unlikely. Now if you were walking Viejo or one of the obscure routes from the Med side, then maybe. But Primitivo is one of the more walked routes, but I don't think it's as popular as the Frances, Norte and VdlP.

As to boots or trail runners, it's down to personal choice. Whatever you are comfortable in. I have walked in both. First Camino I used Decathlon Arpenaz 500 walking shoes and Asics Gel Kanaku trail runners. Second Camino Karrimor Bodmin 4 walking shoes and Decathlon NH100 Walking Sandals. It really is down to what you like walking in.
