Cathedral in SdC to reopen 1st July

"We are happy to greet you again after the months of confinement.

On July 1, the doors of the Cathedral of Santiago will reopen after three months of confinement due to the covid-19 pandemic. The Camino de Santiago thus recovers its goal, the apostolic tomb, and thus calls men and women from all over the world to undertake their pilgrimage. This return to our normality is conditioned, as in all areas, by the preventive measures that are still necessary even now, but it gives rise to the gradual return to services to pilgrims and shelters. Thus, the International Pilgrim Welcome Center will also open on the first of July to deliver their Compostelas to the pilgrims who arrive in Santiago and will do so with the desire to offer again the Christian welcome always adapted to the new normality.

The task is complicated by the uncertainty that the whole Camino has about itself, starting from the dilemma that many of our shelters and parishes where the reception takes place are: is it prudent to resume our activity in service to pilgrims? In these times there is no place for categorical affirmations and from ACC we cannot offer a slogan or even advice. From the trust and support that every welcoming initiative has always found in us, it is possible to understand both the decisions to open and those not to do so.

The hostels especially find it difficult to adapt their activity to the sanitary requirements of capacity, separation between pilgrims and cleaning of common areas. Therefore from ACC we are going to organize for the next week a virtual meeting with those who have used to participate in our meetings. To request participation in it, those interested should write an email to info@acogidacristianaenelcamino.es indicating the hostel they represent."

They understand very well the complexity of all of this— they can open and control their own conditions, but have no ability to advise albergues along the way.

To speak about Camino as though it is 'open' or not is actually posing an absurd dichotomy. It's not like you can throw a switch and turn it on again. A mind-boggling number of things have to fall into place before anyone can undertake a pilgrimage from one end of the Camino to the other. Beginning with the small fact that Spain is an administrative patchwork whose pieces may or may not match.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
