Time of past OR future Camino
April-May 2018
Have been reading on this wonderful site for a while and but have now decided to actually start a real thread. My husband and I are leaving Southern California on April 4th, landing in Barcelona on the 5th. We are planning to stay in Barcelona a couple of nights (to help with jet lag) and then take train (to Pamplona) and bus (to SJPP) on Sat, April 7th. After a night in SJPP, Sunday will be our first day on the Camino. We aren't planning to reserve rooms ahead, but would love to get the first couple to reduce stress;). Orisson won't take reservations now (due to unpredictable weather conditions.) If not going by way of Orisson, perhaps we would try to go all the way to Roncesvalle or not. So much for trying to plan ahead!

With all the knowledge available on this site, any good ideas for places to stay in Barcelona? Not 4-star but I'm seeing a lot for around $200 per night. Thoughts?

3rd Edition. More content, training & pack guides avoid common mistakes, bed bugs etc
Buen Camino Willigsu!

Barcelona is a super popular tourist destination, so hotel rooms are always in short supply there. If you're not finding any deals on the usual travel sites, try Airbnb if you have not yet.

I just had a look on cheap rooms.co.uk they had two nights 5th April starting from ÂŁ59

Sounds like a great start to the trip. It should be nice and warm in the South.

Just a thought, stay in a hotel the first night and find a hostel for the second night, to aclimatize.

Starting the Camino on the Napoleon Route in early April may not be possible. Orisson is not taking reservations because there is a lot of snow up there and no way for Pilgrims to pass, unless you have snow shoes. The way over the mountains may not be passable. It may be worth considering the path through Valcarlos. Just last week, even on that route, a Canadian was rescued after being overcome with the snow and cold there. I am taking it a full month after your start and am still packing for sub zero weather. Snow showers are still quite possible at that time of year in those areas.

Valcarlos is about 12 km from SJPP over relatively easy terrain. The next day, there is a climb before Roncesvalles. So, walking past there to Burgete or Espinal for Night 2, is quite feasible. Again, just a thought.

Hope this helps.

The only problem with arriving in Barcelona is that you may not want to leave! :D
