First Time Walking The Camino

Walking the Camino July/August 2013
Hello,

My name is Rich from the UK and I am spending this summer backpacking around Western Europe... I have very loose plans and really wanted to see where each day was going to take me... that was until I started reading about the Camino.

I finally took the plunge and made the decision to walk the Camino. Starting off in Pamplona in late July.

I am a fit and healthy 23 year old male, so I figure hopefully I should complete it in 30 days (although I am in no rush).

Is there any advice anyone can give me? Is the route well signposted from Pamplona? Can anyone recomend a place to stay in Pamplona which would enable me to hook up with other pilgrims to start the walk?

As a writer, I feel like this journey would be a real eye opener for me and a chance to experience life.... Would anyone agree?

Hope to hear back,

Thank you.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
Re: First Time Waling The Camino

Hi Rich,

You must be VERY excited now that you have finally taken the plunge!

Glad that you will start from Pamplona late in July since 6 to 14 July will be the famous running of the bulls and all will be a mob scene. Don't worry the camino route through Pamplona and west is well marked with the famous yellow arrows.

Check out the Pamplona listings for pilgrim albergues via these two useful links .
The first is the new Forum list of stages and ratings on "all" albergues on the Camino Frances.
>> http://www.caminodesantiago.me/camino-f ... zur-menor/

The second is the Spanish Eroski list.

July should be very hot and it is important for you to stay hydrated. Read this recent Forum thread about drinking enough water while walking. >> miscellaneous-topics/topic18347.html

Buen Camino,

Margaret Meredith

Welcome to the forum, Rich!

1. Congratulations for being able to walk the Camino without rushing it! 30 days from pamplona to Santiago is perfectly possible and will leave you enough "lee way" ibń case you only feel like walking 1/2 day sometimes or to walk on to Finisterre after SdC.

2. Take as little as possible, you really need only the bare essentials on the Camino and every pound to much will weight you down. When you have your packing list ready feel free to post it here and you will get a lot of feedback from experienced pilgrims. Regarding accommodation, I agree with Margaret ;-)

3. As a fellow writer, I can only say: ABSOLUTELY YES!

Buen Camino!

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
