Food for Thought...and Walk

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
Knowing that I'd have a month of quiet time alone and nothing more pressing than taking a long walk everyday is what brought me to the Camino in the first place. A new-found sense of spirituality came home with me but that's a different story! Thanks for sharing this article.

"Few people know how to take a walk. The qualifications are endurance, plain clothes, old shoes, an eye for nature, good humor, vast curiosity, good speech, good silence and nothing too much...."

Ralph Waldo Emerson,
Country Life, 1858

What about the soundtracking of your walks as mentioned in the article?
I'd definitely enjoy listening tot music while walking the camino but my main reason tot do the whole thing is the inner journey part.

Do they conflict? Should I follow "a want" or "a must or guideline"?

What are your opinions on this?

Grts,
Hans

The article seems to be more concerned with where writers draw their inspiration from than with the fact that depending on the situation walking, like so many things, can be both enjoyable and a chore.

People interact with music differently. If music distracts you from the 'now' of the Camino, the people, the sounds, the sights, the walking experience, the contemplation while you walk, the inner journey, then its probably not a good thing. If you can't walk without music, then that's not a good thing and you should try to walk without it. If it helps you get through some times when you need to endure and keep on, then it's good.

I listen to music a lot apart from the Camino. On the Camino, I mostly walked without music, apart from times when I used it as a aid to prayer.

f it helps you get through some times when you need to endure and keep on, then it's good.
I haven't done my first camino yet, but on my long hikes (15 miles or more) I do not use music during the majority of the hike as I like to listen to the surroundings sounds of nature...but have found it to be very helpful on those last few miles of the day! It really helps perk me up during the last part of the day.

Not Anti-Camino just some serious thoughts concerning walking:

Great read reminding why a simple walk helps the thinking. As far as the music, personal decision. We used music in my Abrams tank to take our minds from the ugly task. I did not use music on my Camino it is too beautiful. Or for a daily walk, as life in simple form is beutiful.
