Giro d'Italia stage over Gran San Bernardo cancelled 2023

Several and counting...
The Giro d'Italia had been scheduled to include a stage over the Gran San Bernardo this year. It was dependent on being able to open the pass - ie the 'old road' - quite a lot earlier than scheduled. They were continuing to prepare it over the past couple of weeks but it seemed less likely to be successful as time went by and a decision appears now to have been made. The cyclists will use the tunnel. Walkers may not use the tunnel except by bus or by hitching a lift.

I don't imagine this will interfere with the 'routine' opening of the road by the end of the month or in early June.

It underlines an important message for all travellers. Safety is paramount. Always seek advice from the Hospice and from the hotel in Bourg St Pierre before embarking on the pass during winter when the road is not open. And you need up to date advice on the day you actually plan to travel. Both sources will be happy to give it to you. The owner(?) of the hotel (Bivouac de Napoleon) works on the road clearing - this is industrial level professional road clearing.

And to look on the bright side - I guess it means that if you manage to get up to the hospice on foot/skis/snowshoes on that day there will be plenty of beds!!
