Google Mapping Car

Time of past OR future Camino
Sept-Oct 2015
On October 2, 2015 while I was walking between Nájera and Azofra, a Google Mapping Car passed me. I was carrying a SPOT device so I marked the spot to check later. Well, today I found me! It's really cool because you can "walk" up the road in Google and see just what I saw that day. They blur out faces and license plate numbers to protect privacy, but still -- It's me! Really! On the Camino!

How cool is that?

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Just think of the weight you could have saved leaving your camera at home.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

€83,-
That's SO cool! I just spent several minutes clicking along the Camino, wanting to start walking again...

What is a SPOT device?

What is a SPOT device?

wikipedia: "SPOT is a GPS tracking device that uses the Globalstar satellite network to provide text messaging and GPS tracking (depending on the subscription type purchased). It has a coverage area that includes a large portion of the planet, with the following exceptions: extreme northern and southern latitudes, parts of pacific ocean. SPOT is simplex and cannot receive user data."

Google street view can sometimes go beyond a simple "street view".

The following are photos from Google street view of a cafe and albergue in Portomarin along the Camino. The four photos show the view of the cafe from the street ( the classic Google street view) followed by close up of the entrance, the inside and finally a view from the back cafe and bar overlooking the river.

We unfortunatly had the google car visit our house and in the garden at the back of our house is a line full of our undies

That's great.

That's really cool!

I wonder if one could write Google asking for them to unblur your face in this particular case. "No, really, I don't care about my privacy here; in fact, I willingly surrender it in exchange for bragging rights..."

Very cool!
Any particular reason for carrying the SPOT device?

Well that is really, really cool, bravo
I click around the CF each day after I get a position report from my partner and each walker/cyclist I see, embedded forever in the Google archives, are probably people who indeed use this forum and don't yet know they are there. I was certain I saw my partner one day, how un-cool is that LOL ;-)
Congrats
