hallo and diet

Hi ,my name is Joan and I'll be off by train from Aberdeen to France this coming Tuesday to start the vezelay route . I am looking forward and do some walking here, knowing each step is allready connected to the camino
I have some questions about food I am on quiete a strict diet, vegetarian,no sugar .little dairy and lots of fruit and veg. Does any one have some helpfull suggestions how to keep to that? I have walked a few years ago the last part in Spain and there were so many more food possibilities and also I didn't have this diet yet. Any helpfull suugestions? I probably will bring a little cooker.

Welcome and hope you have a good walk.

Really don"t know your circumstances but do hope that you can diversify your dietary options, at least during your walk. Enjoy.

Welcome Joan.
The 'Ensalada mixta' would probably suit you well. It usually has plenty of lettuce, tomatoes, hard-boiled egg and tuna. Bread may come with it or be an extra. 'Café solo' is black and the sugar always comes in a sachet. You can also check out the various bocadillos, paella etc and 'Tortilla español'. This last is an omlette with potato and onion, it might have a little milk in but I think usually not. Very good and filling.
We had no trouble finding salads and fruit. On two days we carried a small tin of 'peaches in grape juice' for emergencies - just make sure it has a ring-pull top.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I often carried around uncooked rice and beans. High calorie content, relatively cheap, and not heavy considering how long it lasts.

Even smaller supermarkets seem to carry these basic staples.

Hi Joan,
There are small grocery stores in the villages. Lettuce, onions, tomatoes, potatoes, apples, oranges, kiwis...available there. You will be able to buy fresh fruit and vegetables along the way and cook for yourself in some, but not all, albergues. Having your own small electric cooker, as you called it, will be helpful for you.

On the Vezelay route in France most villages do NOT have grocery stores. In those that do, they are often CLOSED. Careful planning is essential if you do not want to go hungry.

Oops!
I know there are grocery stores in the Spanish villages.
I haven't walked the connecting caminos in France, but as a child, I remember the weekly markets where you could buy fruit and vegetables.
Finding grocery stores in every village is wishful thinking.
