This is the best website I have found, you can change the language right on top. It doesn't take SJPdP, put Bayonne instead. For the last part to SJPdP look for the local train or taxi. There is a lot of info on that on other threads on this forum.

I don't fly (they fall out of the sky you know, as well as being the most polluting form of transport) so trains are quite important to me - and I like them anyway, lovely way to travel.

The Italian forum ( I can't remember the address off the top of my head but if you search google.it with the camino etc in Italian the forum should pop up pretty quickly) has the information IIRC.

BUT I can't imagine taking the train.

Slow and expensive way.

Italian FS to Ventimiglia. Then French train across the south of France.

Faster but still not quick. Train to Paris. Then on from there.

Unless you hate flying I'd fly into one of the Spanish airports. Where are you? You shouldn't have any trouble finding a flight from Rome or Milano for not much.
 
Fastest way is the take the over night train from either Rome, Florence, or Milan to Paris and then take another train south to Bayonne and on to Saint Jean. The train normally leaves Rome early evening and reaches Milan late evening and then the rest of the route passes through eastern France before arriving in Paris early morning. You should get early enough to catch the morning TVG train to Bayonne.

I have done the overnight train from Italy to Paris and it is the most effective and inexpensive way by train to reach France. It was called the Artesia Rome to Paris night train but the routing and name has changed

I'm not sure my brain is working 100% but if it is fastest would be

high speed train to Torino. Italian FS should handle this. I think Italo also does but the OP would need to check.

Then IIRC the French run a high speed train from Torino to Paris.

With advance booking the Italian leg isn't that expensive. Still the total price adds up to more then a flight. Plus much longer.
 

This maybe faster but depending on where you are departing from within Italy it may cost more and take longer. Getting to Torino from Rome does take some time. Traveling through France on the TVG is expensive.

I paid only 69 euro for a sleeper on the night train and it was a painless one train journey
 

Actually if you book in advance it's not that expensive.

Rome Termini to Torino Porta Nuova starts at €29 if you book in advance

Then Torino to Paris GARE DE LYON for an additional €29

I'm looking at early March for those prices. But Feb likely isn't much worse.

Now if you book last minute you'll pay top price.

Use the Ter Acquitane site for the train schedule from Bayonne to SJPdP. Ter 62. I think you have to buy the ticket at Gare Bayonne.
