Plan to walk in May 2013!
Hello everybody,

I'm 36 and I'm planning my very first camino in May! Still sifting through all the possibilities and trying to figure out which leg of the camino would be most suitable. I can only take about a week's holidays (10 days at most) and I'll be on my own. So I'd be very happy to hear any advice, I am a little nervous about the whole thing! I would love to team up with other travelling companions in or around the last week of May (date somewhat flexible!).

Thanks in advance fellow pilgrims :)

Buen Camino Paula! I can't really give you a recommendation as I'm starting my Camino 19th of May for the first time. I will complete the whole lot and have taken 35days to do so! If I was in your shoes I would start from a starting point and gradually do the Camino section by section :) but hopefully a previous pilgrim can guide you!

Particularly if it may be your only time on the Camino, start in Sarria. There will be plenty of companions, many starting in Sarria with you. You will get a Compostela. If you have enough time, you can walk on to Fisterra, or just take a bus over for the day (you can do the same to Muxia), and see the Atlantic Ocean.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

Start at a beginning, then when you are hooked you can come back and go forward to reach Santiago-the goal.
I recommend the Camino Frances first, start in St Jean or Roncesvalles or Pamplona. (prefer St Jean)
Good Luck
Come back for more advice, the first night/day you will meet others of a like mind.

Start at SJPP and just see how far you get.....be warned you will be back to cover the rest of the Camino Frances for sure

Hi Paula,

Welcome to the forum and the Camino.
If you decide to start at St. Jean Pied du Port., it is well worth while booking into Orisson for your first night and so splitting the journey over the Pyrenees. There is a shared evening meal there and you will meet up with pilgrims who you will be meeting again and again over the next week.
However you do need to book in advance.

Buen Camino

If you want to reach Santiago on your walk, you might walk the Camino Portuguese, beginning in Porto. It's about 10 days. So maybe skip the first one or two stages with public transport.

Thank you all so much for the lovely encouraging and helpful posts! I have some options there, I'll try to make a decision and get flights booked soon. I'll be in touch again no doubt. Thank you all again and likewise I wish you Buen Camino :)

Hi Paula,
I walked the french route about eighteeen months ago and had a wonderful time. You really need a month available to enjoy it and I can't see where you will fly into and out of, with just ten days available. However, my 12 year old son and I, have just returned to Ireland last week and we walked the Porto to Santiago route in ten days.Got soaked but had a great time.We flew ryanair to porto and back with Aerlingas to Dublin. Ten walking days,Coast route first day.If you fly to porto, take a look around at the departures lounge, you will see plenty of possible walking companions. All the best,Have a great time.
