Iberian airlines does very reasonable flights from Madrid to Santiago. Go to their website and compare rates/flight schedules with the train. I opted for a connecting fight out of Madrid to Santiago with only a couple hours layover and not having to leave the airport.
Indeed, cheap with Iberian Express. Be aware if you buy the more expensive Iberian flight. At the gates they have two indications. One for Iberia and one on another messageboard for Iberia express. After the gate they put you with Iberia ticket in an Iberian Express machine on a cheap chair. I had a 300 euro flight on a 50 euro chair. While the Iberian Express chairs from 300 euros (business class) were empty. There was no discussion possible. Not at the gate nor afterwards. They claim this right.
