Has anyone flown from the US to Milan to walk the Via Francigena? I will be starting (again) in Fidenza, 18 March. How easy is it to catch the train from the airport to Milan Centrale? Is it really busy at Milan Centrale? Thanks for your comments …

Which Milan airport will you be flying into?

Central station in Milan is very busy and not always easy to navigate. Take enough time.

Yes. There are frequent trains from the airport to the central train station, and from there on to Fidenza. At least one an hour to Fidenza, so you don't need to worry about making a particular train, or buying a ticket in advance. (Tickets on the regional trains are the same price whenever you buy them). It's 1 -2 hours from Milan Centrale to Fidenza. The app for the national rail company is very easy to use and it's in English. Trenitalia.

As SapsP points out, Milan Centrale is enormous, but you'll figure it out, and since there are so many trains to Fidenza, it doesn't matter if you wander around lost for 10 minutes or so.

This assumes you're coming in to Malpensa, which is the main Milan airport. If you're coming into Linate, there's no train connection to Milan Centrale, but there are frequent buses.

Fidenza is a beautiful city, and a great starting place. After some warm-up walking in the last of the Po Valley, you hit the Apennines. Spectacular. But you probably know this already!

I have always regarded Linate Airport as the main airport in Milan but maybe I am out of touch as it feels very old! If you are going to Milan Linate I think you can take bus no 73 to the cathedral and then Metro.

Remember to validate your train ticket in the machines before you travel by train in Italy (in most cases).

I've only flown in and out of Linate.
It's not huge. And bus connections to Centrale.

Thomas, in March there are no mosquito problems. I would add that from Malpensa airport to Milano Centrale there is bus service, it's little cheaper than train but you can find highway traffic (https://www.malpensashuttle.it/en/index.html)
