This is our first Camino. Starting from Sarria. The countryside is magnificent. Blossoms, wildflowers, woods, farms, woods - all magnificent! We are surrounded by Beethoven Pastoral. BUT I cannot sufficiently express my disappointment at finding the mileage plaques removed from the milestones. Some yobbos have removed the plaque indicating the remaining distance to Santiago. If I caught the yobbos I would take great delight in giving them a jolly good whacking. Is it posible for the authorities to paint on the mileage or scratching it into the milestones? This would stop this infuriating vandalism! Thanks.

the mileage plaques removed from the milestones

In March it appeared that about 25% had been removed. Take delight in the other 75%!!!

They were a bad idea, using plaques, and eventually they all will be gone. Their replacement will be more durable. The distances were wrong almost as soon as they were posted, though. There have been too many changes in the last year to go for three decimal accuracy on the kilometer-stones.

You might use a gps or fitbit or mobile phone to track your distances then you don't need milestones.

I always liked the old milestones from Sarria. On the one hand, a bit of a 'count down' to the finish line and on the other.....increasing sadness that it was soon going to end.

The ones I really disliked are those wooden posts back down the trail. Nothing so disheartening as a socking great wooden post with a plaque that says 555 kms
