Santiago to Madrid by public transport

I have the opportunity to walk for 7 days in February. I will land mid morning in Madrid and then take a train/bus to Villafranca which would be a good place to start. Is this feasable? Would I go to Leon and then get a bus? I have walked the route but have not used public transport on the Camino other than to get from Madrid to Leon.
Is it possible to get from Santiago to Madrid reasonably easy?

From Madrid, I think there is a bus that leaves at about 00h30 and arrives in Villafranca at 05h30. It costs about 28 euro.
Villafranca is 183kms from Santiago which means walking an average of 26km per day. If you are fit and a good walker that is manageable.

Ryanair has flights from Santiago to Madrid twice a day for about 3 euro - with taxes, 30 euro.

Hi Paul
In May last year we took an over-night sleeper from Santiago to Madrid, We left around 9 P.M. and arrived about 8 A.M., from memory. The train fare was about 45 euro for the tourist class, and about double that for first class. There was a dining car, and each sleeping cabin had a double bunk on either side. I slept well, as at 170 cm in height I fitted neatly in the bed, but my companion at 185 cm had both feet sticking out the end of the bed. My companion had taken a bus from Santiago to Madrid after an earkier camino and found the train much more comfortable, cold feer and all. It might be best to book a few days in advance if you want to get the cheaper tourist class tickets.

If you go tourist class you won´t get the nice bunks. Depending on the grade of train, you´ll get a regular seat, or maybe a reclining seat. The bunks are for top-class people!

The 'tourist' bed price is between 73.50 euro and 190 euro.

You can find in http://www.alsa.es several buses Madrid-Santiago-Madrid, with stops in Astorga, Ponferrada, Villafranca and Pedrafita do Cebreiro.

The bus departs from Estación Sur in Madrid, in Mendez Alvaro tube station.
