sleepbag/sleepsac dilemma.

buena!

Member
i'm weighing every piece for my camino that will commence may 10. even my 'fancy' small, lightweight sleepingbag weighs 2lbs...i know a sleepsac would be lighter. but i'm usually COLD! are refugios really that hot? even in the higher elevations or in mid may?

the flip side: i also hope to spend a night or two outside if i am led to the right spot, and thought with a sleeping bag i could use a big garbage bag around my bag or as a ground sheet.

thoughts.......? suggestions?

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Hola Buena

Last year (May/June) I carried a sleeping bag the same weight as yours and it was just right though I may not need as much insulation as you. There were nights when most of me was outside the bag because of the heat, but there were also cooler nights when I needed it. I also took a silk bag liner which I used very occasionally but it only weighed 4 oz and stopped me worrying. I also took an emergency "space" blanket - also 4 oz which I reckoned would give me shelter if ever I got stuck outside. I never used it, but then again it gave me a sense of security.

I don't know if you have tried sleeping in a plastic bag, but the down side is that, if you cover yourself up with it, you will sweat into your sleeping bag and it could get quite cold and miserable. I think that it is something to be tried out somewhere you can give up and find a bed. (like your back garden).

Nevertheless, whatever you do, the Camino is very forgiving and I am sure that you will enjoy the experience.

Buen Camino

I did it in June, and at times it could get pretty chilly

my bag went down to 5 degrees C, so it was fine, but you may want to err to the heavier side

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.
