Starting from Leon June 10,2012

Hi. My sister and I are starting from Leon around June 10th. We have never done a hike like this, but read a book this winter and immediately said "I have to do this". Excited and nervous. Anybody else starting from Leon at this time?

Welcome Ginosar!

There will be lots of pilgrims around when you start, and you've chosen a lovely city to start in.

You'll find the walk a bit dull for the first hour or two until you get through the suburbs so don't be disheartened. Once you're out in the countryside you'll love it. I'd suggest taking the route via Mazarife to Hospital de Orbigo rather than following the road.

My sister and I are also starting in Leon, a few days behind you on June 14th. We are slow walkers so probably won't catch up to you.

I have wanted to go for six years after reading Shirley Maclaine's book. Only a few more weeks and I am very excited.

Today I trained with my fully loaded pack for the first time in heat and with my new pacer poles. All went well except when I stopped to pee in the sagebrush along a busy trail, forgot I had a pack on, my knees buckled as I tried to stand up in a hurry and the weight pitched me forward into the desert sand.

We are starting on the 13th from Portland, Oregon, USA and arriving in Madrid on the June 14th early morning. We are planning on taking the train from Terminal 4 to the train station in Madrid, and then taking the train to Leon. Nothing booked or set once we get to Madrid, just a plan. So it sounds like we will be one day behind you.

Where are you coming from? You would be welcome to travel with us if possible.

CatherineAnn- I bought a ticket from the Chamartin train station to Leon on the 13th. I think there is a new bus that goes from T4 to Chamartin, otherwise it seems to be 2 subways best I can tell. I planned to leave Leon on the 14th. I'll try to send you a prvate message with my stateside contact info. Maybe we can talk before we leave and compare notes. I'm so excited about going! I'm sure it's bound to be an amazing experience.

Did you buy the train ticket online from renfe? I have been trying but having trouble getting it to work. Any suggestions?

Genosar-- I was unable to get renfe to work so I spent a couple of more dollars and bought it from raileurope.
