To Ivar and all our other Norske members, happy Syttende Mai!
Being married to a Norwegian (grand-son of a Norwegian missionary in Africa) we always used to celebrate Syttende Mai in the local Norwegian Hall with the Norwegians dressed in their 'bunad' the traditional dress, waving Norwegian flags or with a ribbon pinned to our shirts. The Norwegian Seamen's church, members of the embassy and other Norwegian institutions organized processions through the street to the Hall carrying large Norwegian flags.
The day time festivities would be more for the children but at night we would have the most amazing dinner where we would salute a large poster of the Royal family. Sadly, these festivities are dying out and we haven't had a Syttende Mai feast day for about 10 years. So Ivar, have a toast for us at your celebration - and happy Syttende Mai!
