Dear Pilgrims,

Anyone know who St. Jean were? St. Jean from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.

I always assumed, that it was French for Saint James, but it is not, is it?

Saint Jacques is the French name for James.

Originally part of the Kingdom of Navarre the village of Saint Jean Pied de Port or Saint John at the Foot of the Pass was so named to distinguish it from nearby Saint Jean le Vieux or Saint John the Old.
