I've kept a link to it and will definitely be reading. I'm toying with the idea of doing the Ingles in the next few weeks so we might meet in Santiago! Buen Camino!

I have not read what that book says anywhere else.

There is a papal bull from the 12th century that gives you time off purgatory if you visit the Cathedral in a Holy Year, but it does not apply to any other time.

You don't even have to walk to the Cathedral. You simply have to visit it and fulfil a list of conditions.

Next Holy Year? 2021.

People would be sent by the Bishop or the Parish priest to Santiago as a penance. Since pilgrims died on the way it was not unknown for them to be given the forgiveness of their sin before they even set off, but they still had to fulfill the journey.

Just because it is written does not mean it is so.

Maybe others might know more but I believe that the document is the medieval equivalent of an urban myth.

St James' day is the 25th, not the 24th, July.

@ Karen - I know the feeling - I had more than eight months to wait when I decided to do the camino. I hope to blog along the way.

@ Tyrrek - it would be great to meet up. Who knows! Buen camino to you!

@ Methodist.pilgrim - I'm absolutely certain it's an urban myth - no self-respecting person would put their name to such a document!! Anyway, I enjoyed having a bit of fun with what I read in the book, and I'm no relation of the author even though we share the same name.

@ Catherine - am starting out on the 21st September. Will probably miss you, so buen camino and watch out for those naked pilgrims!

So funny! A great way to look at the obscurities of the Roman Church. Sad though, they still have so many bizarre things in place. I love being Catholic, and I have no use for Rome. Silly old boys in funny hats. If they only knew the true richness of the spiritual journey called El Camino de Santiago.

Organized religion can cause us to be jaded. In becoming jaded it is our own hearts that become hardened and it is we who cannot see clearly. The glass become more dark to see through. Some of those men in "funny hats" may easily be true Saints and yet, we shut our eyes and hearts to hearing them. Had I done that to John Paul II my life would be so much poorer today.

OTOH, humor is useful in almost all situations. We must be able to look at ourselves, our cherished orgainzations, families, etc. and be able to see them as others do. It is a great blessing to be able to laugh at ourselves. However, it is a far different thing to hold in contempt what others value greatly. It is simple respect of the traditions of others.

What would the world look like if we could all laugh at ourselves and yet be respectful of each other? None of us would take things personally, reticient to take offense, and openly, demonstrably respectful of others and what they cherish. I hope that we as pilgrims could always be that source of light in the world to share that Peace of the Camino with others.
