WALKER TAKES PILGRIM ROUTE
challenge: Robert Steele
By Jon Colman

GOSFORTH man Rob Steele is well on the way to completing his latest – and longest – charity trek.

Rob, 49, is walking the 1,000km Via de la Plata pilgrim route in Spain.

He is raising money for the Royal Marsden cancer hospital, which helped him beat the disease.

Rob, a CUEDOC driver, e-mailed The Whitehaven News earlier this week to report that he had reached Caceres, one third of the way along the mammoth trek.

“I am suffering a little with the heat – my walking legs aren’t all that great and I am rattling through my first aid kit.

“But hopefully nothing that will stop me.

“Blisters with the heat and for some reason a bit of left ankle pain – must be my age!”

Rob, who started the walk on April 2, was accompanied in the first week by a friend, and was this week due to team up with two friends from Gosforth. He is due to finish the walk, which runs from Sevilla to Santiago de Compostela, on May 13.

It is the 11th successive year that Rob has tramped over foreign terrain to raise funds for the hospital that saved his life when he was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 1975.

He was finally given the all-clear in 2002. Since 1994, he has walked nearly 2,000 miles and has raised thousands of pounds for the hospital, which is the UK’s leading comprehensive cancer centre.

To sponsor him, you can ring the Royal Marsden donation line on 020 8770 0279, visit http://www.royalmarsden.org/campaign, or add your name to a sponsor form, either at HSBC in Gosforth or in The Whitehaven News office, Queen St, Whitehaven.

Money stolen from bag on bed while sleeping. Estelle municipal hostel. Not a big inconvenience as my passport and credit cards were left.
