Popping my plans on the calendar...

Well, I've booked my flights from the UK to Biarritz for the 3rd September and enquired with Express Bourricot about transport from Biarritz airport to SJPP - hopefully by then there will be more people to share the ride (and cost!) with.

I'll overnight in SJPP on the 3rd and then on the 4th start to walk, to Orisson, hopefully (enquiry about a bed emailed to them already - I know they take a while to reply - last time, in 2015 I ended up getting my French friend to telephone them but they were fully booked so I walked via Valcarlos which was a first for me).

This will be my third time starting from SJPP - in 2013 I walked SJPP to SdC and in 2015 I walked SJPP to Burgos as I had two friends who wanted to walk so I did three weeks with them to "show them the ropes". My friends completed the whole of the Frances. This year I plan on taking a minimum of six weeks to walk to SdC.

I was in SJPP in January 2016 - passing through by car on my way to southern Spain for a holiday. I made my husband stop and we wandered around the town and I showed him the pilgrim office, the accommodation where i'd stayed, the church, gate and little bridge and we went for coffee in one of the little cafes. It was a real nostalgia trip :) Afterwards we headed by car via Valcarlos and there were quite a few pilgrims heading uphill in the snow - they probably thought I was a bit barmy shouting "buen camino!!" out of the window to them - felt a bit bad that I couldn't offer them a lift but the car was loaded right up. There was deep snow up at the top at Ibañeta and at Roncesvalles.

One thing that struck me was was how little time it took to drive from SJPP to Roncesvalles! It took me two days to walk there both times :) and about half an hour in the car! I think I much prefer walking...

WildPlace, like you I sent an enquiry to Orisson and got no response - however I was told to use a language app and email them direct - got a response within an hour :D https://www.freetranslation.com/en/translate-english-french

Hi WildPlace, I will start my 1st Camino on the very same day like you and it seems that our travel plans might also match. I will fly London-Biarritz on 3rd Sep, landing at 5 pm in Biarritz. If you have the same flight I would be happy to join and share cab and cost to SJPP.

Buen Camino!
