From Bilbao Loiu Airport take PESA bus to San Sebastian.

Take PESA or ALSA bus from San Sebastian to Bayonne. PESA goes to Place de Basques, ALSA goes to Gare Bayonne; or,

Take Renfe Cercanias from San Sebastian to Irun; and,

Take Metro Donostialdea (Euskotren) from Irun Colon station (located across bridge over tracks north of Renfe station) to Hendaia (co-located with Gare d'Hendaye). Note you can take Euskotren involving several transfers from Bilbao or San Sebastian; and,

Take SNCF train from Gare d'Hendaye to to Gare Bayonne; or,

Take Transports64 #816 bus from Gare d'Hendaye to Place de Basques Bayonne.

Take SNCF train from Gare Bayonne to SJPdP.

I did this, it's easy, though different to whariwarangi's advice above.

I took a bus to Pamplona from
Bilbao bus station. Then from Pamplona another to Saint Jean Pied de Port. I had two hours or so between buses so time for a wander round Pamplona, a few pintxos and a glass of vino.

Which route you choose will depend on your flight arrival time and how it fits with the bus times.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how best to achieve this?[/QUOTE

we took the bus. It is really very simple once you take the first step of finding the bus station. Then the last little way you take the train. It is an enjoyable and relaxing one day trip.

Yeah, it works too.

Local bus from Bilbao Loiu Airport to Termibus runs every 20 minutes.

Termibus
http://www.termibus.es/index.php?idi=en

ALSA or PESA bus from Bilbao Termibus to San Sebastian. Every half hour.

CONDA (ALSA) bus from San Sebastian to Pamplona. Every hour.

Or

Autobuses la Union y la Burundesa Bus from Bilbao Termibus to Pamplona. Several daily.

And

CONDA (ALSA) bus from Pamplona to SJPdP. Here is where the problem lies. Service is SEASONAL. There is no bus from end of service November to start of service in March. In summer there are 4 buses daily; the first at 1030, the last at 1730. In March the one bus leaves at 1430.

You'd have to assess both routes (the other being via Bayonne) for cost and time advantages.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
