RENFE is a huge mess. Train tickets get available at weird timing, there is no rule really… How they (RENFE) manage to still exist is a mystery to me (13 years living in Spain..).

I live in Spain and use both Alsa (bus) and Renfe (train) often. Both are very bike friendly. You MUST add your bike when you book your ticket but it free of cost. They have limited spaces so that is why they require booking bikes.
