LIVE from the Camino Counting pilgrims on the Norte AGAIN

...to meet you (I was #3 for the day!). “Celebrity” sightings on the Norte are rare! 😎. Arrived in Llanes and am shocked By the low numbers of pilgrims - I think I finally outpaced the crowd that started late April in Irun! More more pleasant to not be in a huge wave of folks looking for beds.

LIVE from the Camino Counting pilgrims on the Norte AGAIN

...a pilgrim version of my favorite Sesame Street character, Count von Count (unfortunately without the cape and thunder). I start next week, on April 30 directly at Asturias airport, from there it's only a few hundred meters to the camino. In about two weeks I'll be walking comfortably east to...

Ground conditions - Camino Del Norte

Hi Mark Irun to Bilbao is likely to provide a few of the muddiest sections, as we experienced March/April a few years ago. A couple of times we stopped and scratched our heads, working out how to get through a section, but that was all. There's still going to be a lot of asphalt and...

Coastal alternatives to the Norte's asphalt

Thanx 🙏 @peregrina2000 and everyone else for these alternative routes. I will try (some) of them on my journey. Starting 3 April from Irun. Buen Camino Pieter

    Del Norte

Hi Milena, Thank you for sharing your experience. I will definitely take it into consideration. I wrote you in my mind, if I can catch up, we will meet and you may recognize me from my ginger hair :) Mel

    Del Norte

I am starting from Bilbao on the 25th of April. You will probably catch up to me since I am going slow :-) My experience from my previous caminos is that it is not that bad when it rains. It is part of the deal. I am trying to be flexible and not plan too much ahead so that I can maybe make it...

    Del Norte

We walked the Norte route, from Irun to Santiago, in 2019. Because it’s a coastal trek, I’d be prepared for rain year-round. No need to worry! It’s part of the journey/adventure, and I’m sure you’ll have a warm, dry place each evening. Take a poncho or rain jacket, and a cover for your pack. A...

    Del Norte

Hi everyone, I am planing Camino del Norte only the part (for this year) from Irun to Santander. I will start on the 25th of April. It will be my first Camino walk and I am a bit worrying about the weather. I heard that it is one of the most rainy time and I am wondering how much can affect my...

Salinas on the Camino Norte - when was route changed?

Ah, good to know. I'm walking in late April/May/early June and will send updates, if that's helpful. I'm slightly terrified of all the route changes (and have made note of many of them), but will try to stay upbeat~!

Mark we may see you there. My wife and I are leaving Bordeaux on 27th March to walk down coast of France then to Irun so likely start about 3 April on the Norte.

Coastal alternatives to the Norte's asphalt

Hi, Rafael, I am sorry not to have seen this earlier. Since I haven’t been there, I really can’t give you an answer, but I don’t think there has been any effort made to take people off the official camino to the coast, so I would definitely have GPS. There are also parts of some of the...

Accommodations. Need to bk in advance?

At that time of year I'd say you could wing it. I often don't book ahead even in busy times and I've never been left out in the cold! If you have a healthy budget it's even easier of course, if pilgrim accommodation is full, which is unlikely.

Coastal alternatives to the Norte's asphalt

Hi Laurie, I'll be doing the Norte in the middle of next month April. Do you think that after 7 years since you did it that one can find their way to and from the coast OR a GPS is a must? Thank you!

Accommodations. Need to bk in advance?

Hi. I only have 7 days and will be walking from Irun to Bilboa end of April, first week of May. Aside from booking ahead in San Sebastián and Bilbao, do I need to book in advance or will I have ample options to choose from on the ground when I arrive. In other words, can I wing at this time...

    Start of season?

My wife and I started our camino from Irun on April 14 last year and I don't remember encountering any facilities that had not yet opened. If there were any, they were very rare.

    Pre-booking & post-Easter (2025) numbers on the Norte

...nature) - but wondering if I could loosen up with that a bit after Easter has passed. I think I would like to spend the Easter Sat/Sun (19/20 April) in Bilbao. Not looking for a "Camino family", I'm an introvert that wants to decompress and sketch in the evenings. Maybe I can relax that on a...

    Start of season?

Does anyone know, when Tu Camino Hostel in Onton will open. It is said that will open when the season begins. When does the season begin. We shall begin our Camino from Bilbao the 15th of April.

Arrival at San Sebastian Airport Mid-April: Norte Walk

...is well signposted and connects with the path from Irun within 10 minutes. The only downside - accommodation options in Hondarribia are usually more expensive, but there are some good value places - and mid-April is before the main 'tourist' season begins. Wherever you begin, all the best.
