If you're flying into Madrid and not staying there some of the buses pick up at the airport, which may be easier. San Sebastian is lovely, compact with an interesting old quarter, good food and lots of places to stay. Cheaper than Madrid, though it may be different in high season.
Just done this journey today! I went by bus from Madrid as it was considerably cheaper than train when I booked. Alsa.es is the website, takes 5.5 - 6 hours, depending on which departure you book - there are many. There may be other companies doing this route eg Flixbus. Bus prices are static...
It's definitely a good start. Once you have the layering idea it becomes much easier.
I'll own up to being a gram counter, and was surprised how much containers for things (eg glasses, money, toiletries, waist pack) can add up in weight. I am lucky to manage with just one extra pair which...
A vote here for the train. From SdC is comfortable and fast. The bus station at Zamora is rather basic, though the man in the consigna (left luggage) was very helpful. It seemed that it is only served by Alsa buses.
There is now no mainline train connection between Irun and Hendaye, which is the last station on the French rail network. You can't buy a through ticket because there isn't a through service. However, there is a metro connection between central San Sebastian, or from Irun mainline to Hendaye, or...
Bevskia, to answer your question, it depends. Spanish train ticket prices are dynamic, like plane tickets . You may be able to buy a ticket in advance which is cheaper than a full priced ticket with discount. Or not. There's a full explanation, and much other useful information about trains in...
Hi, I did this last year, but haven't managed to copy the link. The thread is called something like "walking Finisterre to Santiago to avoid crowds". It's not a lonely Camino, but I missed the pleasure you get from meeting and re-meeting people that you get if you are walking in the same...
Just reporting back in case anyone else is looking for information. We ended up walking Canterbury to Ramsgate: this worked better for train times and mileage in relation to our overnight stop at Grove Ferry. No problems at all at the pilgrim office in Santiago - they just asked how many k I had...
I walked the Tomar to Coimbra section last May and there were very few pilgrims. Had I not teamed up with another pilgrim I'd have been walking alone. I estimate that there were only about 20 people a day walking this bit. We met in albergues at night.
Just finished. Whilst actually walking, for me it was as worthwhile and immersive as a longer Camino. What I missed was the daily rhythm of albergue life. That's partly because I was on the A Coruña branch which is less frequented, and partly because I had to do short stages and therefore stayed...
