LIVE from the Camino Feels Unpleasantly Busy on the Camino Frances (May Day, 2024)

And you are one more person adding to the crowd, haha! The big packs of tour groups is what puts me off. I actually stop to smell the roses (often literally), draw and take pictures more, waiting for the bolus to pass. Meanwhile, my recent two weeks on Camino Sanabres, I saw not ONE other...

LIVE from the Camino Anyone near Castrojeriz now

Are you thinking of the Ultrea albergue in Castrojeriz? They serve a community dinner and there's a big wooden winepress by the dinner table. He does a fun basement wine tour and tells great stories. I've stayed there twice and translated for him during the tour. He's a riot. Love that place.

Would I be likely to encounter leeches on the CF in April/May?

You mean that guy who decides to walk with and keep talking to you when you want to walk alone?

Where is the "drinking pilgrim" statue?

For some reason, I laugh walking up that switchback bridge, seeing the people zig zagging down on the other side at the same time.

Where is the "drinking pilgrim" statue?

I was surprised how many pilgrims walked on past while I was there, never discovering this feature.

Is the Camino too crowded now?

Oh good, I can't wait to hear about it! When are you planning to go?

Is the Camino too crowded now?

I walked the Frances in spring 2016 (end of May, through June) and then in fall, 2018 (I think?). There seemed to be a lot more people in the fall. I preferred the spring for a variety of reasons (green fields, red poppies and other flowers, sun earlier in the morning, storks...) I never had a...

    The Perfect Souvenir

Ah. Yeah it's a huge challenge, I can imagine. Not only importing crop pests and diseases but, as you said, protecting native species. All kinds of domino effects leading to extinctions all over the world.

    Stamps- missing a few days

I have several Compostelas, so don't feel the need to stand in line and get another. However my plan is to ask albergues, churches and bars/cafes along the way if they will stamp my credential AND my journal. I think it would be fun to have stamps along with my writing for each day.

    The Perfect Souvenir

The key is when you harvest them. If they get more than 2" (5 cm), they are all hot. Pick them when they are small and one in ten is hot.

    Stamps- missing a few days

How do other people, not on this forum, find out about the 2 sellos a day rule? (The other thing I wonder is why people make such a huge deal about getting a Compostela.. especially if they've already gotten one in the past, but I assume there are many different personal reasons.)

    The Perfect Souvenir

I looked for Padron seeds when I was in Padron. Was told they are sold there on market day on Sunday. The Franciscans brought peppers back to Spain from around where I live in New Mexico, which was then New Spain. We have lots of peppers here but not those! (video of Market Day in Padron.

Bed bugs in Samos Convento do tras!

Please consider the fact that sending your backpack ahead via transfer, before you have heat treated your gear, puts others - whose backpacks will be together with yours - at risk of picking up bed bugs. Take a break and clean your stuff.

Is this man and shop still present in Castrojeriz?

So happy to know he is still there! I love Castrojeriz.
