Botafumeiro back in place in the cathedral

I too bought my bus ticket in advance, but I was waiting at the cafe instead of walking by the sea because there were pretty severe winds in Muxía yesterday and being outside for more than five minutes at a time was pretty uncomfortable, not to mention hazardous (and that was in the center of...

LIVE from the Camino Accommodation shortage on the Norte

We were just on the Norte, joining it at Avilés. No problems booking reasonable pensions and hotels. We did pay attention on weekends and booked two days ahead. Apparently things calmed down after the intersection to start the Primitivo.

Was planning to walk from Santander to Gijon commencing 18 June but now I'm worried about accommodation...

I have a fresh thread here somewhere about the Norte (I am on my flight back). I had no problem booking ahead a day or not booking at all up until Arzua. Stayed mostly in hostels and albergues, and occasionally in a private room. Buen Camino

    Primitivo accommodation advice

Welcome to the forum! The Primitivo is not the Frances, so the famed 'bed race' is not really much of an issue - at least, not yet. This can of course change markedly if you start on a long weekend/ public holiday. Weekends/ Monday are when most people start; starting just one or two days later...

LIVE from the Camino Accommodation shortage on the Norte

On the Camino Del Norte. Surprised by the amount of pilgrims. Many mature pilgrims, like myself with a few Caminos under their belt, mostly appear to be staying in hotels. If staying in hotels be well advised to book well ahead. I have been trying to book a mid priced room one day ahead without...

Was planning to walk from Santander to Gijon commencing 18 June but now I'm worried about accommodation...

Hi @Pegstar, welcome to the forum. You are asking a couple of the great un-answerables but I do understand why you're asking. https://www.gronze.com/etapa/santander/santillana-mar is probably the best resource for accommodation information and does specify which are bookable and which are not...

Was planning to walk from Santander to Gijon commencing 18 June but now I'm worried about accommodation...

Hi, I've had a good look at the posts about the accommodation options in this section and I'm travelling alone and on a budget and was hoping to stay in hostels for finance but also to meet people. It looks like there are fewer of these on the Norte and the distances between them, it might be...

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

I believe the caminos de Santiago in Iberia are the only walking pilgrimage routes in the world where, depending on route, it is possible to: walk less than 20k a day and sleep under a roof each night, and spend 40 euros a day or less for accommodation and food; and meet people from all over...

Mid-April to mid-May Camino Francés, my experiences, insights, mistakes and lessons

Thanks for taking the time to share with us. I thoroughly enjoyed the read. I walked mid April to mid May in 2016, and have not made it back, but still hoping as I approach 70. I know the Camino has changed, but your experiences still mirrored mine. Busy alburges in the beginning, learning to...

Botafumeiro back in place in the cathedral

Unrelated to the botafumeiro: did you have to sit at the cafe for 5 hours to hold your spot on the bus? I was hoping to take the 15:15 out of Muxia but spend time at the sea until around 14:00. (As long as I have a ticket; if I didn't have a ticket booked ahead, I'd wait at the cafe, too!)

    Primitivo accommodation advice

I can't really comment as I don't have any experience of what you refer to as Private Donativo's. My experience is only of volunteer Donativo's run by associations. The one's that are sadly abused by many people who pay the bare minimum or even less when often they could be more generous and act...

    Primitivo accommodation advice

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot since my recent Camino (and reading lots of forum posts). The donativos I stayed in a decade ago where simple places that provided the basics - while being generous if you can was always the point of these places, the new wave of private (and...

    Alternative to Pamplona for overnight

...Pamplona. It’s a very quiet town and will give you a head start climbing the Alt de Perdon the following morning. There’s a nice restaurant in the town. There were two Alberque when I stayed there. Gronze indicates only one now but there are other accommodations. Booking ahead might be smart.

    Alternative to Pamplona for overnight

You cannot book ahead at Zabaldika as is the case with most Parochials.

    Alternative to Pamplona for overnight

Zalbadika is nice, so is Trinidad de Arre, though I'm unclear if you can book ahead. I have found that places in between major stops tend to have space, but no guarantee. In recent years, Ive been in several albergues with just a few people, if not just me.

A call for regulation or permit on the Francés

...of sleep spots each night) requires one direction of walk and one night per stop, not my personal idea of a camino. The third case is booking ahead, which people can do now on the camino if they wish. If the "problem" being solved is overcrowding, perhaps the second case warrants exploring...

    Camino fatigue?

...many Facebook groups there are very strong responses to anyone who dares to criticise the manner in which people undertake a Camino. Booking ahead and luggage transfer appears to be the norm now. And I would certainly not take 'sides' on that. People will walk it as they wish. It just...

LIVE from the Camino First time San Salvador, here we go

Congratulations, well done! If you mean the parts with all the tall plants on the sides of the narrow paths, I did never see them at all on the Primitivo. The trail is wider there all the way. It was definately social, always someone to sit with at cafees etc. For me it was a nice combo of...

Is this a thing I can do?

If you booked accommodation somewhere you could possibly ship to them (with their permission of course) however booking that far in advance is not really advisable. Alternatively you could mail ahead via post-restante with Correos. Only once you're within the country! If you try and ship from...

...are now showing on those camino's too. Over the last few years the number of pilgrims on the Portuguese has skyrocketed, necessating booking ahead for many. Ditto on the Inglés. Places on the Norte have always experienced seasonal difficulties because of popularity as a holiday destination...
