    Swinging of the botafumeiro

Specific, probably time sensitive information. According to our tour guide the botafumeiro is used at the 7:30 service on Friday night unless other arrangements are made. At least as of November 2013.

How do people 60-and-over plan their Camino?

Some humor for the over 60 crowd. Muscles have memories but mine have Alzheimers. We restarted our Camino after a six month break and little time for prep, thinking we'd regain our Camino legs in a week. Double that. Advice from a senior cyclist from Alaska. "It's not like you're twenty...

Foal on the Camino at marker 55 km to Santiago

Actually it was hoped someone might reply that both were within the fence. A busy highway was nearby, a cause for worry.

    What is Manjarin like now?

We walked by on Nov 1 and saw the roof being repaired. The latrine was on the other side of the road. Guess perrigrinos who stay there don't have to get up during the night to pee

Foal on the Camino at marker 55 km to Santiago

Today we encountered a small horse on the Camino, before Furelos. It's mother was inside the fence and it had somehow escaped. She was trying to maintain control but kids will be kids. We stopped at a nearby bar without success. A bit later encountered a local man walking and showed him the...

    Altus poncho in Ponferrada?

Well not in Ponferrada nor Villafranca but in the small tienda next to the church in O'Cebreiro. Perfect size and color. Can't be worse than the old poncho which was donated as even it was better than nothing.

Thank you. Will look into it soon.

Are there sections of the Camino that involve very narrow paths or switchbacks?

Hello to a fellow 67 year old woman. Just finished the descent into Molinaseca today on the road as the Camino was river. The hardest part for me is the rocks. On the descent from Alto de Perdon thought there must be a rock for each of my sins before realizing there were far too many rocks.

    Altus poncho in Ponferrada?

My poncho was lacking in today's rain. Is there a store in Ponferrada?

Walking Poles - Bring them they are essential

Loved the poles and wouldn't walk without them. One day found myself in the middle of a herd of sheep, making eye contact with a ram. Held my poles loosely in each hand and said uh-uh. Oh we like sheep.

    Sterilizing water bottles

Thank you for the tip about Milton. Was able to order some tablets from amazon.com without shipping charges even though they came from the UK.

Pants for the Short of Stature

I am also short. Used LLBean beach pants which come in a variety of sizes. They come in Capri length which is ankle length for me. Their performance on the camino was outstanding. Very easy to wash and dried so quickly, well before the ex officious.

    List your shoes

I have odd feet - smallish with a high arch, size 7 EE women. Ended up with men's Asolo size 7 W. These worked even with my sausage toes. Used Birkenstock Arizona sandals as these were what I already had. No complaints.

    Sterilizing water bottles

Walked with a Camelback 1L bottle clipped to the front of my pack. Repatriated home due to illness, bouts of nasty bacterial bronchitis. Has anyone had experience with sterilizing water bottles? No dishwasher but did have a tin cup and immersion coil. Hindsight is 20-20 and didn't think of this...

Must see sites along the Frances

We visited the monasteries of Yuso and Suso on Apr 16. A spectacular place and well worth the detour. Tickets may be purchased separately at the center. The tours are in Spanish. The yellow and green bus at the top of the hill is for Suso. My only regret is we were too ill to visit the convent...

When a pilgrim from the United States is sick on the camino

My husband and I both contacted acute bronchitis also called the camino cough. Our first stop was the Centro de Salud in Estella While we have travel insurance it only covers accidents and not illness. Staff members at the Centro explained we would have to pay first but since they did not...

    Sleeping bag alternative?

Thanks for your help. We live in Maine and started out to REI yesterday only to turn around due to snow. Was going to look at a Coleman Stratus fleece bag liner. Yes we will certainly consider the private albergues. The reservation feature is great. We are in our mid 60s and this is our first...

    Sleeping bag alternative?

My husband and I are planning to walk the Camino Frances in April/May of 2013. Has anyone used an all weather space blanket instead of a sleeping bag? 12oz from grabberworld.com. These blankets seem to be versatile and inhospitable to bedbugs. Don't have zippers but duct tape will work. Thank...
